BOSl0N. Mr. W. Matheson Visi e-+ (I. the two Cities. 0Ull.00K BRIGHTENING The Wet Weather Retarding Vegetation and Business as Well. '___ A little over two weeks ago Mr. Walter Matheson left Charlottetown on an ex- tended visit to Sydney and Boston. While in the former city he noticed that busi- ness is reviving again and prospects a.rc‘ brightening. The inliux at the present » sequence the limited accommodation of the city is overta xed and large numbers of people are secure dwellings. Mr. Matheson said he understood that in a short time the street railway will be commenced. Mr. Whitney holding the franchise . When asked about establishing of a ship building plant at SydneyV Mr. Matheson remarked that while in Sydney he had noticed an article bearing upon the question in the press and in consequence he had conversed with a prominent engineer upon the subject. The gentleman talked with was one of wide experience and was acquainted with the steel ship building yards of Cardiff. In referringto the matter the engineer stated that it would take at least ive years to establish a plant at Sydney capable of building the liners talk of. To give some idea of the f i . ing rolled is polished and cut- at the ends machines necessary to prosecute steel ship- building, the plates are rolled out 100 feet long 10 feet wide and one inch and one and a half inches thick. The walls of the college are already built and when completedwill resembleto some extent the Prince of Wales College. While in Sydney Mr. Matheson visited Messrs. Prowse Bros. and Crowell’s large store. Mr. Prowse was not at home at the time but upon enquiry he found that the firm is doing the largest business in Sydney, the success being largely due to Mr. I_.». E. Prows¥’s popularity. In order to keep abreast of the llrufs large and growing trade an addition has been made to the store costing some $8,000. On Sat- ‘ urday last the firm opened their branch at the coke ovens and the initial day. was marked with very large amount of busi~ ness. \Vhile in Boston Mr. Matheson learned that the damp weather' has been very disastrous to vegetation. In conversation with a gentleman he was told that the wet weather has been most injurious to the corn crop causing it to rot. lu May there was a fall of rain on 23 days of the month. The gentleman in question feared that the farmers would not be able _ to till their orders, and in consequence he would not be able to till his orders. Owing to the low temperature the dry goods houses have not been able to sell their summer goods. The citizens of Boston state that the season is weeks behind other years and as a consequence there is no noticeable dimerence in vegetation along- the line between the Provinces and She ttate of Maine. It is needless to say Mr. Matheson enjoyed his trip very much. { - ` i _lcep rea as A BEVERAGE.
