and hunting, and banners were stretched
from windows and across streets, bearing
words of welcome to the President and
expressive of the sentiment which the.

Although the time announced for the
departure of the President from the home
of Mr. Milburn, in Deleware avenue, was
ten o’clock, crowds began tn gather in
front of the house as early as nine o’clock.
A detail of bluecoats kept the crowd back
from the sidewalk in front of the house
but those most eager to catch a glimpse of
the President and Mrs. McKinley indis-
criminately ip vaded the beautiful lawns
of adjoining residences, and some even
went as far as to climb up on the ver-
andas.
_ As the Presl lent's carriage entered the
grounds a salute was fired. The Esplan~
ade was crowded to sufocation, and the
vast assemblage overflowed to the court of
fountains.
