' ‘To think that all this time I have_ never mentioned the "Superiorl Table." n is w this table, presided‘ over by its special genius, Lady 5.. that all the daintier things go,‘ things which would be quite out of i place lira tenement room — white Shetland wool shawls, or a pale pink Pyrenean wool petticoat, or some very finely worked lace-trimmed un- dergarment. These are ‘put aside for distressed gentleiolk, poor gov- ernesses, poor clergy and the like. They are sorely needed and grate- fully received by a class on which poverty often presses very hardly. By now all the general goods are unpacked, and we come to the ape-l cial contributions. The King's and the Queen's have a table to them- selves, and a flne lot ‘of sensible- looking clothes they are. War Loan Aid Out of the money gained by the exhibition of the Queen's Dolls’ House at Wembley. Her Majesty al- located £2,000 to the Guild This, in. vested in 5 per cent. War Loan, will be a tremendous help. ‘ , The work is nearly finished now; the plies of clothes on the table are very tidy; the “Superior Table" has a tempt-in! array of 800d clothes. This year the Queen's total is 13,107. The masses of brown paper, cal-d. board boxes, split packing cases, sacking and string have all been cleared away, and the finishing touches have been put to the Queen's own table full of goods. The Stately iootman appears in his overcoat, and hat in hand, announc- es Her Majesty's carriage. The Queen says good-by to us all. and is just turning to go, when she notices two workers some way down the corridor. Her Majesty sends for them to shake hands and to thank them for their help; no one is for- gotten. Some of us will meet again 1n a few days to unpack the rest of the Guild parcels, the contents of which will amount to 50,000. (What we have been so far dealing with be- longed to the Queen's personal group only.) There will be the pack- ing up of both groups-hard work, I can tell you! But our great wish is to keep down working expenses and to give our own time and labor, thus follow- ing the lead given us by the First - Lady in the Land-the Queen-God bless her! __-{o-@-__._._. Now a Necessity NO period in history has seen ouch de- velopment as the last fifty years. . . and in the forefront of that development no improvement, is more marked than in the transmission of speech by electricity._ In 1876 the idea of transmitting sound by electricity was treated as a joke. Skeptics despalred of its future; the less charitable laughed. Today it has bcconlc a necessity. The social and business life of the civilized world depends to a ‘ great extent on its use.
