McKay formed a. partnership under the firm name oi Brace, McKay Ind Co. Shortly afterwards Mr. James McLeod was admitted. Be- ginning in a. modest way , in n. wooden building on the site o! the " Present Bank oi Nova Scotia build- in . the business continued with t personnel until 1892. when W. | K. McLeod resigned and, the bus- \ iness was continued by Messrs J. A. Brace and James McLeod. The en- tine stafl’ at that time was four. In i893, Mr. J. A. Brace pur- ciialed the site occupied by B. L Woodside on the opposite side of the street where the psescnt store is located. In i807 a brick build- ing 40x80 and bhPP-S stories Nhlgh was erected. replacing the old B. 1.. Woodside building. In i899 James MacLeod died-and A. S. MacKay was taken into the business. In i901 a joint stock company was formed, with J. A. Brace, President. A. S. MaoKay. Secretary and Crcrelman MacArthur, Director. 111-1905 Mr. Brace purchased the iCampbeil hotel, tore the building down and Summer Street was opened on to Water Street and g new brick building was erected, ex- tending, to the corner, and this com Drlses the Bohurman block or as it now is known the MacArthur blcc Mr. MacArthur having purchased it a few years azo, Mr. Brace retired from the firm in._i0l4 and later Senator Cmelman MacArthur also retired from an active interest from the business. Brace -Mr. Brace was born in Char- lottetown, and is th= son oi the late George Brace. who had a. lane boot and shoe factory. - Mr. Brace came to Summer-side as a young man in 1874 and has - been closely associated with the business and social llie of the Town q ever since. Ho recalls many in- ‘ ‘stances o; the early days oi Sum: merside. , Mr. Brace is perhaps the only men still residing in Summer-side. who was in business at that period. When Mr. Brace came to Sum- . merside it was a town of little shops iactoriu. Shipbuilding was of ootirse the big industry and Mr. Brace remembers how the men and " boys earned a few extra. shillings tramping down the oats in the holds .0! the steamers, trading be- tween the Island and Great Brit- ‘Gill Themen were paid five shiilinds for a ten hour day and boys were paid two and six. In those days the clerks from the stores went out and broke the roads open after a heavy snow storm. Mr. Brace learned the art oi sales- manship in the store oi the late R. T. Holman. He later started business for himself and is one oi the only ones living who were in business in these very early times. His first stand was on the site now occupied by the Bank o! Nova Scotla. From the first he was suo- cessful and moved several times, each time to seek larger quarters. In 1880 he went into partnership with W. K. MacKay and a little later on James‘ Maclecd was ad- mitted to the firm. The present firm oi Brace Mac- Ksy Co. whose large brick store warehouses are on the north side oi Water Street, had its origin in attic business started by Mr. Brace, although none o: the founders are now connected with the firm, Mr. Brace who remained the longest with the firm retired in 1014. He has seen the map oi Bum- merside change several times. Fires \ still remain. When changes were made it was always for the better and Mr. Brace views with pride, the now beautiful residences and handsome buildings that have replaced the old town as he knew it in his youth. Mr. Brace is a charter o!’ the Summerslde Board o: Trade. He is the only member living oi the building committee o! the Methodist Church at the time it was built. He remembers when the High School was built in 1879 and has watched with interest the careers oi’ many men and women who were educated there. Mr. Brace still takes an interest in the town's affairs and is to be s_ee_n down town every day. He has prospered through his own energy and. is now“ enjoying the fruits oi his earlier labours" in quiet contentment oi a life well spent. Senate. In 1000 a very fine brick store was built with a floor space oi about nineteen thousand square feet. This build- ing. equipped with an up to date cash system and every modern con- venience was opened in 1901. Mr. Sinclair retired rrom lness in i908 and the firm hen be- came an incorporated body. Mr Stewart became president 1nd manager. Associated with him were members of the stai‘! who had been ior some time heads oi their departments, and had practically grown up.in the business. On the directorate at that time were the late T. D. Ramsay. who became Vice s sident; H. G. Muttart, the present President: J. A. Srnallman, and G. W. Phillipe. . In 1913 he sold the business to Charles MacLellan who died during the Flu epidemic oi 1915. Gourllrs, Ltd., then bought out the business and Mr. E. P. Foley, the present owner, was made manager. Mr. Foley is a very competent druggist and learned the business with Gourlies, Ltd. and Klnleys Drugs, Halifax, and Lunenburg. l-Ie bought out the stone in 1927 and obtained a. large share oi Prince County patronage. Mr. Foley ha; just entered the political field and will contest the 5th district oi Prince for the Liberal party at the forthcoming Provincial election. Mr. Foley is a native of West Prince and was educated at Alber- ton High school and Prince oi Wales College. He has been auocla- ted with the business life of Sum- merside for many years. He is an active member of the Board oi Trade and ‘keenly interested in the advancement of the town oi his adoption. Mr. C. I. Arthur's Sheet Metal Shop Until March of this year this business was under the capable management oi the late James Howatt Arthur, who at the time of his death was the oldest active business man in Summerside. He bought out the old established bus- iness stand of Milton Walsh. when Mr. Walsh accepted a position in the Marine Department. For forty five years Mr. Arthur carried on and he was recognized as one oi the best sheet metal workers o the Island. ' Since his death his sons, John and Earl have looked alter the bus- iness, John was with his father for many years and Earl, a younger brother is learning the trade. The firm have just recently in- stalled new machines which are capable oi manufacturing every thing in sheet metal work. When a very young lad he learned the Jewelry business in Charlottetown. He came to Sum- merside in 1906 and started up for hllnself. Gourlies Drug Stor One oi the newmt additions to the business motions of the town is the Dalton Block, built in 1930 by Mr. J. E. Dalton, Proprietor oi Gourlim Ltd. This drug store had its origin long before the town was incor- porated, when Mr. MacKlnley open- ed a. little drug store in 1808 at the west end of the town where Barber's Shoo Shop now is. This was called the Prince County Drug Store. Three years later Mr. J- Alffld Gourlle purchased the business. The name or Gourlle is associat- ed with the pioneer history of this town. J. Alfred Gourlie's grandfather, James Gourlie, was a native of Glasgow, Scotland, and came out to New Brunswick in 1835. He settled Gallant Drug cc. Mao- = Iellan he bought out the Doctor's drug business at Summerside. Mr. Gallant was courteous and obliging; and had a thorough knowledgle oi pharmacy. These two essentials brought. him much suc- cess in business and the goodwill of in Mlramichl. In 1850 he removed to Sunlmerslde, P. E. Island. For many years he was actively engaged in mercbantiie aflairs and for some years was manager oi the Dominion Savings Bank. From 1875 to 1802 he held the position of town clerk. His son, previously mentioned, studied the Drug business with Mr- MacKlnIey, who operated the first drug store in the County. Mr. Gour- lle carried on the business very suc- cessfully until his death in i903. His son, Alfred W. P. Gourlie, who was in Maple Creek. Assiniboia. at the time, returned home and took charge of the business. After the death of A. W. P. Gourlle in 1912 the business was taken over by Mr. J. E. Dalton, who had been in the employ of w. Gourlle since 1905. Mr. Dalton possesses good busin- ess ability, is broad minded in his views and is mm obliging to cus- tomers. To these traits of character are due the success which has at- tended his eiiorts through many vexatlons and trials. - In December 1917 the drug stone was burned to the ground. Mr. Dal- ton secured the lower premises of the Clifton House and carried on there until the present handsome building was erected. With characteristic foresight M.r.
