Prof. Raphael, one of France'a leading physlologlva, showed that this "living" light was the pro- duct of zymosls, which ho called ducl- ferase oxidizing on another chemical compound, which he called luclferlne. As soon as these substances, when mingled together, come into contact with water they gave forth light. Prof. Raphael had succeeded fn isolat- lng both these bodies, and been able to keep them in bottles for several months without becoming luminous as long aa they were in a dry condition. Prof. Raphacl’a researches had lm- mense practical importance lil con- nection with the discussion on the question of the productlcn of cold light, a brief account of which was sent from Paris, while they also bear on certain problems of the ultimate construction of llvlng tissue. IN LUNG PAST DAYS 0F BODY-SNATGHERS Relics In Scotland Showing How tho Dead Wal Protected From the Relurrectlonlata In the days of the Reaurrectlonists in Scotland various means were de- vised to prevent the nefarious prac- tice of body-snatching. Recumbent stones of huge dimensions were fre- quently placed over tomba ln lonely churchyards, while burying-places were often made unapproachable by the erection of lofty, massive railings. The services of the local blacksmith were also requlsitioned to fasten strong bars of iron over the collins. to prevent the possibility of the body being uplifted from its resting-place. In many churchyards watch-towers were erected, at the door of which, after an interment, careful watch and ward was kept, alld not ii few tales were told of mysterious beings being surprised in the midst of their ghostly depredatlons. , In a few places Mort Safes or Dead- Hollses were constructed, in which the dead bodies were allowed to remain for several weeks, or until such length of time as they were no longer ser- viceable for dissecting purposes. An interesting specimen of Mort Safe ls to be scen‘ln the quaint Klrllyaird at the ruined Church of Cowie, near Stonehaven-a favorite haunt of the Resurrectlonists from Aberdeen. The corpses were conveyed ln dogcarts to the Granite City, and, with a view to escape detection, the lifeless figures were clad once more in the garb of th living and placed on the conveyance ln a sitting posture. On one occasion lt is related that a party of Resurrectiorilsts stopped at a wayside lnn for refreshments, when all partook of the same at the door of the inn. The lnnkeeper, noticing the silent figure left alone ln the con- veyance, remarked: “Will yer freend no’ tak’ a drum?" Without saying a word, the party instantly mounted and drove off, leaving mine host, who was not without suspicions, to draw his own conclusions as to the identity of his visitors. n . The Mort Safe or Dead-House ln the Btonehaven dlatrlct ls of a par- ticularly rare type. it is a subter- raneum chamber 18 test by 12% feet and about 8 feet high fn the centre of the arch. It is constructed of stout masonry, and ls a splendid piece of work, the arch giving evidence ot sound ollftamansbip. In this apart- ment, guarded by two massive iron doors fitted with enormous bolts and bars, the contlned dead were kept for stx weeks and a day before interment ln their last restlngplaca. There are no records of this place 'havfnm over been rlned. Seventy years havel elapsed since the last body was do-1 politod there. _ , Village Rolla Unoarthed J During the digging of a grave at Hawkrtdge, Somerset, the pedestal of the ancient village cross was unearth- ed; also a carved circular rosa which may have been the and of a Latin cross. - _*mi ..
