To The Citizens of Charlottetown ' I’ 1'0 ma: CITIZENS or CHARLOTTETOWN: One of the first sieps taken by the recently formed Junior Board of Trade was to appoint a Civic Im- provement Committee and to advocate strongly a ‘Clean Up and Beautification of Property Campaign’ within the city. x The Provincial Government and the City Council have sponsored the Campaign advocated by the mem- bers of the Junior Board and the Charlottetown Guardian has generously donated considerable space for messages upon this important subject to be ad- dressed to the citizens by the Premier of the prov- ince, by the Mayor of Charlottetown and by other officials and representative citizens. I am pleased to have this opportunity of commending this excellent activity and already many of our citizens are cooperat- ing wholeheartedly in this Civic Improvement Plan. Two weeks from today upwards of three hundred representative citizens of most of the towns and cities in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, northern and eastern Maine and from the city of Si. John's, Newfound- land, will arrive in Charlottetown to attend the Dis- trict Conference of Rotary Clubs taking place here June 7th and 8th. Already almost every available room at the Charlottetown Hotel has been reserved for the period of such conference and large numbers of visi- lors will be located at the other hotels, tourist cabins and in private homes. A still greater number of visitors, possibly the greatest in our history will arrive in Charlottetown for the visit of Their Majesties’ King George VI and Queen Elizabeth the week after the Rotary Convention, and the city will again be filled to overflowing by the influx which it is expected will take place during .the Confederation celebrations in July. Other Important events which will bring large numbers of visitors to the city include the Prince Edward Island Esfhibition, starting on August 14th, the Canadian Tennis Cham- pionships, the Maritime Golf Championships, and the Annual Convention of the Maritime Board of Trade. Let all of us do our part in causing our city to present as favourable an appearance as possible dur- ing this eventful summer. C. N. BISSETT. President, Charlottetown Board of Trade. »Notice to the Citizens of The City of Charlottetown ' Never before in the history of our fair City. have we had reason to anticipate so great a number of visitors as are expected to be with us at some time or other during the approaching summer. ' ~‘ ~~ l Since it is the desire of all .. orthy citizens that Charlottetown may be seen at its best, the Mayor and City Councillors join in expressing the necessity for concerted effort on the part of every one to x-operate in this _. Campaign. The work of cleaning up properties, renovating and redecorating dwellings and business premises, preparing and planning of gardens, etc., if begun asearly as possible will be a boon to many who are now seeking Itiploymaait. CA committee has been appointed to assist and cooperate with the citizenry, and per- aons wishing to secure the services of tradesmen, artisans, or general handy-men are invited to enqlre by phone or other wise at the City Hall. Hygienic cleanliness ls a matter of personal pride with most people, because they know from scientists and medical men that cleanliness makes for health and from their own experience, that it makes for comfort. Spring is the logical season for a thorough clean-up Winter has left dirt and dust in the house and un- sightly rubbish and bare spots out- side the house and the sunshine is here to help us in the task of mak- ing everything spick and span. Women are, naturally the most enthusiastic boosters of "Clean-Up" casnpalgns. Most communities sponsor "Clean-Up Weeks." The same idling mislht. be said of our sidewalks and parks. How many cities in Canada are so fortunate as to have a strip of lawn between the sidewalks and streets? Yet we have many streets of this type which are truly pleas- ing to the eyes of a weary pedes- trian. We also havealargemunberorf squares scattered over the city. These squares give shade and quiet spots in which to sit and rest dur- ing many hot days of the summer and also give our children a lovely playground safe from the danger of the streets.
