— st ane THE DAILY EXAMINER, - - - Our Import Trade. ntre r/ Gazette. ) (AM The advocates of trade with the United States attempt to defend and gratify iree their representation of the trade and industries of Canada as in a state of depres- sion and retrogression by citation of foreign commerce. Sir for example, instituted statistics of Richard Cartwright a comparison between the years 1673 _ and 1887, which shows a decline of some fifteen million dollars in foreign trade, and charged the decrease to debt, taxation and re stricted markets. The unfairness of this compari- son is obvious. In 1873 Canada enjoyed quite as effective a protection to home industry as any tariff can give, in the high rices and inflated currency in the United States produced, her manufacturing prosperity wel! marked ; moreover, the prices of ali products fifteen years ago ruled from 25 te 50 per cent. higher than at present, nivking the value of our foreign aud trade larger than at present, although the wantity was very much smaller in 1873 ia now. The value of Canadian exports in 1887 has been exceeded only four times since Confederation, and the quantity of produce sent out of the country to foreign markets has,we believe, never been so large as last year. —— --_-—<-— + - - Apvice to Moruers.— Mrs, Winslow's Soothing Syrup should always be used when children are cutting teeth.
