Although possessing no large manufacturing plants, Sum- merside turns over a mighty volume of business in proportion to the size of the town, and has the en- viable record of leading all Canada with the lowest per capita tax ar- rears of any municipality. Its tax rate, too, is amongst the lowest in the Dominion, Over three quarters of the population own their own homes and an atmosphere of quiet prosperity prevails. A well equipped standardized hospital serves the needs of the municipality, while one of the fin- est school buildings in the Mari- times is located in the Town, along with St. Mary’s Convent for young ladies. Beautiful church buildings representing many denominations adorn the town and give emphasis to the religious inclinations of its people. Th’e largest business is the Silver Fox Industry, which brings fur buy- ers from all-over the world during the fur season. During last winter the fur houses of Summerside handled sixty five to seventy thous- and skins, shipping them to the great fur houses of London, Paris, New York, Montreal and other large centres, representing a value of approximately three million dol- lars. The Canadian National Silver Fox Breeders Association, The Prince Edward Island Fur Pool and the Dominion Fur Sales are large organizations with headquart- ers in Summerside, In addition to the fur_ business, the export of seed and table stock potatoes represents a healthy in- dustry, while the fisheries contrib- ute substantially to the revenue of the town. ,_ _ Summerside is also represented “in the air" with a radio broadcast- ing station located in the town. In short, Summerside is repre- sentative of the general condition of Prince County-with its people industrious, thriving and contented. Associated with Summerside in Prince County are the towns of Kensington, Alberton and .Tignislc These towns represent the business centres for the County and banks, general stores and professional services are available for service to the municipalities. Agriculture and Fox Ranching predominate as In- dustries in Prince County and the well-kept farm properties and spreading acres indicate the healthy condition of economic life in this -section of Prince Edward Island. King's County is exceptionally well adapted for tourist develop- ment and its towns are 'equipped with splendid hotels and facilities to attract tourist trade. George- town, the Capital of the County, possesses a fine natural harbour and its sandy beaches make it an attractive summer resort. Montague is situated on the beautiful Monta- gue River and also bids fair to de- velop into a natural resort for tour- ists. and summer visitors. Its busi- ness section is well developed and is the centre of trade for the sur- rounding_ rural districts. The town of Souris, located at the mouth of the Souris River, is a port of call for the S. S. Lovat enroute from Pictou to the Magdalen Islands and return. The fishing industry has de- veloped considerably and there are two colrl storage and freezing plants in operation. These three towns are the centres for business in King's County and along with the rest of Prince Edward Island, this County is sn- joying healthy business conditions. f- .
