The latest argument we have read against prohibition runs this way: Indi- ans and other savages unused to rum speedily destroy themselves because they have not cultivated their power of resist- ance. Exclude the temptation from the white population and they too would lose their power of resistance, and by so much their inoral stamina would be destroyed. lf this theory is sound the obvious lesson is to give the savages all the spirits they can make use of in order to develop their power of resistance and moral stamina. _In like manner a man who has once had small-pox is immune against a second attack, and this immunity is an excellent thing in its way. But it would hardly be worth while to disseminate small-pox by wholesale in order to secure immunity for the survivors. Too many would die in the process, just as millions of white men have died while developing their power of resistance to drink. There seems to be uncertainty as to what constituencies Hon. A. G. Blair and Hou. George E. Foster will contest at the coming election. In the present House Mr. Blair represents Queens and Sunbury, while Mr. Foster represents York. Mr. Foster has been asked by ihe Conserva tives of Mr. Blair`s constituency to contest that seat with him. Many Liberals in St. John, and York de- sire Mr. Blair to be their candidate in one or other of those two constituencies. Neither of the two party leaders in New Brunswick has yet made pub_ic his in- tentions in that regard, and it is possible they `may try conclusions together in either York, Queens or St. John. The recent mysterious murder of Kiltie Scharn in New York is yet unsolved. Her dead body was found in a flat, usually oc- cupied by herself and her brother, wounds having been inflicted by a hammer and by strangulation. The investigation by the police has brought to light the fact _that within six years there have been five other similar murders of women by heating and strangling in the same local- i:y, the perpetrator having in each case escaped detection. The rule that “mur- der will out,” while usually true, has still many exceptions. PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND And its Attractions to Tourists.
