1 ' '..‘HASZARD'S:- GAZETTE. MARCH 4. tU& ILLUSIONS OF THE BRAIN. Dr. Gooch relates the case of a lady who, in cotisequence of an alarm of fire. believed that she was the Virgin Mary, and that her head was constantly encirc- led by a brilliant halo. Dr. Uwins gives an account of an intellectual young gen- tleman who, from some morbid associa- tion with the idea of an elephant, was struck by a horrific spasm whenever the word was named, or even written before him ; and to such a pitch was this infatua- tion carried, that elephant paper, if he were sensible it were stich, produced the same effect. A similar case is told of a gentleman who. on narrowly escaping from the earthquake at Lisbon fell into a state of delirium whenever the word earthquake was pronounced in his hear- ing. The Rev. John Mason of Water Strateford, evinced in every-thing sound judgment, except that he I.)eIIVt‘tl he was Elias, who foretold the advent of Christ, who was to commence the millennium at Stratcford: A lady, twenty-three yr.-nrs ofage, afflicted with hysterical mndiiess. used to remain coiistiintly at the windows of her apartment during the attinmcr., When she saw a beautiful cloud’ in the sky, she screamed out, “ Garverin, Gar- verin. come and take me!” and repeated the same invitation until the clouds dis- appeard. She mistook the clouds 1‘...- balloons sent up by Garverin. The Rev. Simon Brown died with the conviction that his rational soul was annihilated by a special fiat of the Divine will; and a patient in the Friends’ “Retreat,” at York, thought_he had no soul, heart, or lungs. There was a tradesrnan who thought he was a seven shilling piece, and advertiseddiimsclf tliits:—“If tny wife presents me for payment, doii’t change me.” Bishop Warburton tells us of a tnati who thought liimselfa “goose pie ;" and Dr. Ferriday of Manchester, had a pa- tient who thought he had “swullowetl the devil.” In Paris there livedutnati who thought he had, with others, been guilloiined, and when Napoleon was em- pcror their heads were all restored, but in the scramble he got the wrong one! Marcus Donattts tells us of one “ Vicen- tiaus, who believed himself too large to pass one of his doorways. To dispel this illusion, it was resolved by his phys- ician that he should be dragged through th aperture by force. This erroneous ' ‘dictate was obeyed ; but, as he was forc- ed along, Vicentinus screamed out in agony that his limbs were fractured. and the flesh torn from his bones. In this dreadful delusion, with terrific itnpreca- tioiis against his murderers, he died.” Evaomu 'I'I-IE Lici;ivsr: LIQUOR I.aiv. —Peter Buckley, of Dela ware City, Delaware, has been convicted on four counts, and fined one httudred and four dollars, for selling liquor without license. It appears he attempted to evade the law, by selling a cracker or segar for a fip, and asking the purchaser to take a drink. He proved the sale ofa cracker in one in- - stance , and a segar in another, and con- - many tniseries beyond riches as on this;' — ~-lhntgwheu she seems -to play, is at the _same titnels nning her own bowels, and aflN$%mm. .,-. .,,,i ,.. .,, We-.5): .s-'°t "'4 = 7-’? ‘winch paints tended that he had the right to give away his liquor to his customers. But it was proven that the purchasers went to the house to get the liquor, and that the cracker or segtir would not have offered suflicient inducement to call them there had the liquor not been anticipated. The court held that it was an attempt to evade the meaning and spirit of the law. Puiisoiiu or CON'I'Iv:N1‘MEN1'.——I have a rich neighbour that is always so busy that he has no leisure to laugh ; the whole business of his life is to get money, and more money, that he may still get more und‘niore money. He is still drutlging _ on, sayiri what Solomon says, “ The dilligent hand iniikcth rich." And it is true Ill-’l9.‘t_'(l; but he considers not that it i- 7 not in the power of riches to make a man happy: for it was wisely said by a man of great observation, “that there be as side of them.” And yet Heaven deliver us from pinching poverty, and grant that, having 8- competency, we may be content and thankful. Leriis not repine, or so much as think the gifts of God unequally dealt if we see another abound with riches, when, as God knows, the cares that are keys that keep those riches, hung often so heavily at the riclt man's girdle,’ that they clog him wlih weary days and restless nights, even when Jattiurs.-sleep quietly. Dear Sir,—-In this district your Pills command a more extensive stile that: any other prtiprietar inedi- cine before the public. As rt proofof their eflivciiey in Liver and llilious complaints, I may mention the fol- lowing case: A lady of this town, with whotii I am personally acquainted for years, was a severe sufferer from disease of the Liver and digestive organs; her medical attendant assured her that he could do no. thin; to relieve lier sufferings, and it was not likely to could survive inuny mouths. 'l‘his announce- ment naturally canned great alartti among herfriends and relations, and they induced her to make a trial of your Pills, which so improved hi-r general health that she was induced to continue them until slia received a perfect cure. Iwasindnc to go into our County Hospital, where I had the best medical treatment the Institu- tion afforded, all of which proved of no avail, and I came out no better than I went in.
