During the seasons of 1937-38-39 enormous quantities of pelts were thrown on the markets of the world. Not all of those of- fered for sale were produced in those years but in 1938-38 par- tzcularlr. a great proportion of the over-simply was caused by the cut- ting clown of ranch animals. It is only this season that the full force of the consequences of that cut ltli)\\'ll is apparent. The quantity of silver fox pelts which will be available from Can- \ iiilliill sources has been variously \ (*.\.\.l.lL0(1 at from 125 to 150 \ lilluilsdfld, or less than half of the ESQSSSEEZ ,1 -..l For Breeders we say “Wel- iilil good luck to you in your i.n.._i‘ ‘i\iil__§.\f dining the coming year. i’ w. n. Foxes brought here and kept only a few weeks show- ed such a marked intprovetnetit as t0 be truly astonishing. There is, after all, something in this clim- ate that makes for perfection of fur, but we rnust get on an aver- age more size and that can be acquired by heavier feeding in the earlier months of the pups life We must also take greater care oi our foxes, spending more time and work on them and studying more their breeding and nutrition- al requirements. They have perked up and are taking a new interest. It is not that all of them expect to produce platinums. MR. GEO. A. CALLBECK ‘Of the 1940 Prince Edward Island ‘Judge to Explain Placings AL snow rms 05E I Judge of Fox IShOWNeek (L. W. Hancock, President of the P. E. I. Fox Breeders’ and Ex- hibitors’ Association) There is one week out of the year that every keen breeder of fur ani- mals looks forward to frcm one end Show Week. There is nothing that causes a rancher to keep on his toes more than to know he is going to dis- play before the public eye the best of the fruits of his yeai-‘s libor. He knows his animals will be close- ly scrutinized by the Judges and by the visiting public. He knows most of all that his fellow breeders, or his competitors if you please, will particularly have an eagle eye on his animals. The amount of money to be won or the amount of adver- tislng to be had from showing are incidental. The other points men- tioned are stingers alongside, which spurs every showman to plan and work tooth and nail not a few days or a few weeks, but the full 12 months of the year- Placing a. good show animal on the table means perhaps years of planning; years of experiments in {breeding and crossing various foxes in order to produce what is pleas- ing to the eye. After the animal has been carefully bred and pro- duced. the next step is that of pro-i o1 the year to the other. That is . per feeding and care. Without all, ' \ YIIIIIIIIIIIIIIJM’ -- PROGRAM ..
