SPLENDID. . , CONTRIBUTION FROM BOSTON.—ln the Intercolo- ulal Hall, Boston, on the evening of Jan. 29th, a very successful whist party and social was held in aid of the new Catholic church at St. Mar- garets. (See Minutes of Assembly I923 pages 28 and 67.) Why were they unwilling to ask Assembly for it? Because they were in mortal dread that if they asked for it they might gel: it. The last thing the opponents of union really want is an appeal t0 the Presbyterian people: for this would show how few they could muster against this great forward movement and at the same time it would take away the best of their few remaining "talking points.‘ How unreal then is all this tumult of protest that the Union- ists have refused to permit another vote. How can you refuse a man a thing which he hasn't asked for and doesn't want? Nobody wants another referendum. The Union- ists don't want it because they don't need it, the constitution does not call for it. and the im- possibility of taking the votes of Presbyterinns or former Pres- byterlans now in Union Churches would make such a referendum un~ fair; and the anti-unionists do not want it because it would advertise agaiin their numerical weakness and deprive them oi’ their only pretext for opposition which they could offer to the politicians. “Preservilng" the Presbyterian hurch The Presbyterian opponents of Church Union resent the propos- ed legislation because it would terminate the separate existence of the Presbyterian Church. They say to the Unionists "lf you want to unite with the Methodists and Congregationalism, go ahead and unite; but leave us our Church" Let us consider what thtis course would imply. The Presbyterian Church is an organization.‘ it has its member» ship, Presbyterics, Syuods and General Assembly. its hoards, do partments and agencies. its zit-livi- ties and policies. Those and other things make up the Presby- terian (Jhurch; through them ii functions and expresses iwcll‘. The Methodists and (longrcgzititm al Churches, similarly are organiz- ed.
