Predicts New Increase ' In Mineral ,Production TORONTO, Jan. 3 - (GP) - Canada's mineral production may reach 32.000.000.000 within four years. V. C. Wansbroulzh. vice- presldent and managing director of the Canadian Metal Mining As- sociation, said in a year-end re- view. Citing an estimated production of 51.200.000.000 in 1951, Mr. Wane- brough said the industry is head- ing towards a 32.000.000.000 year. and "that year might well be 1965 if present prices and production trends continue and major expans- ion projects in aluminum, iron ore and petroleum come in on schedule." While rising prices account for a large part of the increase in dol- lar value. volume is rising. too said Mr. Wunsbrough. and in lmi the index of physical volume was higher than ever (102.7 compared with an average 100 in 1935-39. and I. war-time high in 1941 of 134.5). other points in the review in- cluded: ' Iron ore set a production record of more than 4.000.000 tons, about three-quarters of it from Ontario's Steep Rock and Algoma. mines and the remainder from Wubana. Nfld. All three are engaged in ex- pansion projects. A start was made on develop- ment of deposits at Marmara. Ont Development of the Quebee-Lab- rador field, with ore deposits now proved totalling 420,000,000 tons, continued on schedule. "By 1955." he said, "production should be under way at an annual rate of 10.000000 tons. The figure might well be increased to 20,000,- 000 tons by completion of the St. Lawrence deep waterway project By 1060. iron ore will certainly be one of Canada's major earners of United States dollars." Value of non-ferrous metals was up nearly 30 per cent at 3465.000.- 000, and producers expect 1952'to be, their best year yet. In 1952 an increase of five per cent in nickel production is ex- pected over this year's 275,000,000 pounds. stil short of the 1943 peak of 288,000,000 pounds. Sherritt Gor- don's nickel property at Lynn Lake, Man.. is expected to be in production within three years and to add 17.000000 pounds annually. Copper and zinc were each up 20 per cent. ctpper nt si48.090,000. a record. and zinc at 3l17.000.000. Lead increased 12 per cent to 555.- oeo.cc-0, but voume was slightly lower and prospects for 1952 in- dicate little change. Asbestos reached 380,000,000. up 33 per cent. vGold pn duction was about 8160,- 000.000, showing the first decline since 1945. and Mr. Wansbroug-ll comments: "The position of the gold min- lng industry as a whole has not been changed appreciably by free- dom to sell on world markets. At the moment. the Canadian mint price is averaging 53590 while the free market is approximately 339.- ”Assistance under the Emer- gency (Federal) Gold Mining As- sistance Act has amounted to ap- proximately s43,000,000 during its four years of operation. Total for 1951 is estimated at 511,000,000. In a period of steadily rising costs. cost-aid has assisted and in some cases extended and saved the lives of many of our gold mines." Mr. Wansbrough said that on Aug. 1 the average weekly wage in the mining industry stood at 360.- 32. the highest for any Canadian industry. He added that approxi- mately 10 per cent of the la- dustry's working force of 80,000, are new Canadians who have come to Canada since the war.
