The meeting was open- ed by the President, Earl Jelly. l3. A. of Unionvale. The Secretary, Mrs. Albert’ Maclsaac of Brae read the minutes. The following committees were formed: Resolutions: Lewis Mac- Kenzie, Mrs. Ira MacDonald, Mrs. Bendsten. Nominating: Mrs. Mae Palmer; Mrs. Pearl Duncan and Beatrice O'Brien. Press: Mrs. Al- bert Msclsaac, Marion Cook and Robert Frizzell. The President, Mr. Earl Jelly extended a welcome to all the new teachers of the area and to all others. Salaries, though impor- tant are only secondary - yet we all must live. Inpsector Merrit Callaghan of Alberton then addressed the teach- ers on the Course of Studies. Grades 1. 2. 3, Basic Readers. 4. 5. 6 New Readers. Aim is to have: pupils read as many supplemen- lary books as possible. The Grade 8 results show that Language is still poorly taught. a definite period should be set aside erh day for it. The Gage Co. are sending teachers to P. E. l. to conduct classes for the benefit of teachers using Basic Readers. The President then called on Miss Mary Gillis whose" interest- ing topic was language. A child should be taught to express him- self in speech before the mech- anics of reading. The teacher must encourage a larger vocabulary. phrases. etc. ~Mr. Lewis MacKenzie, Princi- pal of O'Leary School was the next speaker. His topic was “Arithmetic? The general IBWB of learning, interest. drill. etc.. were stressed. The next speaker was Mrs. MacCallum who spoke on Junior Red Cross work. Then followed a very fine de- monstration of Physical Training by Mr. Earl Jelly and his pupil! of Unionvale School. Re the report of the curriculum by Mr. Lirlstone. the difficulty of obtaining books for a small pro- vince likc PEI. was mentioned The Dept. of Education should be commended for its changes in books. Afternoon Session The afternoon session with an able address by Dr. Lloyd W. Shaw of Charlottetown. Di- rector and Deputy Minister 0f Education. In conclusion Dr. Shaw stressed the slogan: “Let us strengthen our fundamentals." Mr. MacKenzie of Charlotte- town, Chief Supervisor was heard in a splendid talk re the change in text books.
