We often see the lowe-t types of farming in the world in places where the soil is proverbial for its fertility. STOCK RAISING. If stock-keeping is going to prove the salvation of Prince Edward Island the farmers should, of course, keep stock. Which kinds will they keep? The answer to that question should be given with much care. The way in which it is answered may mean thousands and thous- ands of dollars to the farmers, As to the question of horses, I will not meddle with it further than to say if it is to be continued in the Island in future it must be with a view to meet the markets of the time. We can’t mal.e specific mar- kets come to us. Our only hope is to go to them. The Island is peculiarly adapted to DAIRYING. It is cheering to notice that the people are recognizing that and are acting upon it. Those gentlemen who are laboring in the province to extend their dairy interest are the benefactors of the people, however, much of self may be present in their motions. My brother, Prof. Robcrtson, deserves the “ freedom of the Island ” for pressing that matter upon the attention of your people, It is gratifying indeed to know that not less than 11 cheese factories are at work in the Island. There is room for very many more, and it is to be hoped that the work will go on until every town- ship in the Island will have one or more. Take good care of Mr. Dillon, he is doing good work, and don’t let him take any of his pay in he«tile criticisms, when not deserved. It is peculiarly fitting that much attention should be given to dairy- ing, for the reason, first, that the natural foods for dairy etock can be grown abun- dantly and in fair form, These are such as a variety of grasses, various grains, as oate, peas and barley, and corn for ensilage. For the reason, second, that the produce can be marketed in the concrete form. The cost of marketing cheese is small in- deed compared with that of marketing the foods from which it is produced. And for the reason third, that the drain on soil fertility is relatively small. If combined with butter making of a higher order, es- pecially in the winter season, it would affurd employment to the farmer the year round, and would also provide him with a harvest during twelve months in the year. The Island is well adapted to BEEF GROWING, for the reason that it is well adapted to dairying. The conditions of adaptability fur both interests in settled countries is practically the same. While dairying, therefore, is diligently pursued, beef pro- ductions should not be neglected. It may be difficult to establish a trade in live cattle between this place and Great Britain, because of the ultimate limit of produc- tion. When the production is limited, of necessity the d fliculties of traneportation may be so grat as to prove a serious barrier. Still there is room for the pro- duction of a large amount of beef, even for the home market. So long as Halifax butchers bring supplies of meat from Ontario with unfailing, regularity, the year round, just so long will there be an opening for the beef made in Prince Ed- ward Island if the right type of meat is produced. But there is no preduct in the live stock line that can be more successfully grown here than MUTTON. The moisture of the climate is very favurable to the verdure of the pastures. Succulent grasses much of the year make sweet mutton and plenty of it. It has also been demonstrated that rape will grow here in finest form. That roots wiil grow magnificently is verified by every annual exhibit held upen the Island, and the same is also demonstrated at all the shows in regard to grain. Here then we have the most suitable kinds of food that can be obtained for the production of mutton, «immer, autumn and winter, in fact the year round. It has been proved by actual te-t, that lambs bought in Prince Edward Isiand, September Lat, for $2 per head can be shipped westward to Guelph, Ontario, fattened there and reshipped to Halifax the following March, leaving a cach margin in the and it has been proved that lambs of the same lot can be sent across the sea from Guelph, Ontario, and sold early in May in Liver- pool, br.nging On an average from $11 to $12 per head, and leaving acash margin in tue hands of the Ontario dealer. If the Ontario people can do this with Prince Edwacd I-land Jambs, how much more easily can it not be done by the people of Prince Edward Island with their own lambs ? There is surely af great 0; ening for the growth of sheep in this Island, af they are only grown of the right kind. But, it is not probable that high prices will be paid for lambs in the autumn, ow- ing to the large supplies that are brought from the Western States at that season to supply the markets of the East. They will require to be kept on into the holiday season and probably until the winter months. PORK can alzo be grown with profit in such a land. Pork making and dairying go hand in hand. Where tne latter flourishes the furmer cannot languish. Pork is easily transported, as it goes in the cured dried meat form, hence there need not be any feverish anxiety lest it may spoil before reaching its destination. The demand for it in Bruain is likely to coatinue, and the prices paid will be better than those paid for American pork, since it is made from a variety of foods. But none of these interests can be male best educated in all that apertains to their calling, Then, take care of the men who are engaged in this work in your midst Tam glad to know that my friend and furmer pupil, Professor Harcourt, is in your midst, and that he is doing a good work, at least, rumor says so, and I am quite sure from iy previous knowledge of him that this is one of the ramors tha: is true. Teachers of agricu'ture, like ministers, are, or ought to be good man. They bring good tidings with them; there- fore, they shoul t always be made welcome. This may not always ap ply to professors of Animal Husbandry. It is thought by many that education will tend to draw young men away from the farm. My con tention is, that it will tend to moor them to the farm, if it is of the right kind. If the tendency is to take them away from the farm it is not of the right sort. This view finds confirmation in the fact that during recent years uearly all the young men who have graduated at the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph, have gone ~ to farming on the completion of thei work, that is to say, when they go from the college to the farm. This is trae probably of 90 per cent. of the whok number. Tuos. Suaw. Agricultural College, Guelph. ec Hi Gtniieiisieniaaunne RIGHTS OF THE MARITIME PRO- VINCES. Mr. George Robertson, President of the St. John, N. B., Board of Trade, ic a most enthusiastic advocate of the claims of the Maritime Provinces, He believes that they have not received a fair show. since Confederation. He says that the Mari- time Provinces are taxed for the benefit of western Canada, and he also nays the peo- pie down by the sea are tired of : Above all, Mr. Robertson supports the Shain ol St.John as a winter port. He loves t dilate upon the facilities afforded to com- merce at St. John, upon the safety, large- ness and grandness of the harbor, upon the fact that itis practically a free port, and that itcan amply accommodate ves- sels to de the entire trade cf the Dominion of Canada. Mr. Robertson when at Montreal a few days ago was interviewed by a Lepotter ef the Star Here is the way the President of the Board of Trade talks, “I express the feel hye of the people of the Maritime Provinces on this matter. We feel, and justly feel, tinat the older cities of Canada have not yaid the attention to the Maritime Provinces that they should have done. If our ports are not made the+ winter ports, the ports where the imports and exports of Canada will be handled when your harbor here i: frozen up, it will lead to a state of feeling which will be very troublesome in: leed politically. In fact, nothing more strong ly shows the loyalty of the people of the Maritime Provinces than their peac fal state under the circumstances.” Mr Robert-on was particularly strong en the neglect shown the Maritime Provinces. “In no other country in the world would it be permitted for the trade to pass through a foreign country when it is possib le to keep it within our own ports It i is our hope and our as pirati on to build up a great nationality, and how can we di that without doing our trade ourselves How can we do it without having ou: winter ports Canadian ports?” “And you argue from ths, Mr. son ?” queried the reporter. “1 tell you that if you continue to build up Boston and Portland at the expense of the Maritime Provinces, the time wil! come when the provinces will demand separation from the Dominion of Canada I do not want to preach that doctrine, bat that is my firm belief.” “Is there any strong feeling in that direction in the Maritime Provinces?” “There iz, indeed, that growing strunger every day. We being treated fairly, and we realize that keen:y. As a part of the Dominion of Canada we are heavily taxed, and we are not getting our share of the benefits that were promised us under Confederation.” “You think, in effect, that you are being taxed for the benefit of western Canada?” “You have hit it exactly.
