MURRAY, QUEEN STREET “ SUNNYSIDE DENTSTRY’ aS ne aS Office in New Prowse Plock, Grst door to the right up sairs. OUTRAGEOUS. Tue manner in which our Minister with a portfolio attends to the duties of bis department may be inferred from the fact which was disclosed in the advertising column of Wednesday’s Patriot. Sir Louis Davies announces that he will ad- dress the electors of Belfast and Murray Harbor at seven meetings commencing at Pownal, It is clear that no business byeselectiona in these districts. The gross impropriety of Sir Louis the shameleseness of his att2mpt to over- ride the independen: opinions of the elec- tors on Provincial politica by arraying all the power and patronage of the Dowmiaion Government in favour of the candidates of the Farquhareon Administration, It remains to be seen whether the electors of Belfast and Mur- ray Harbor will submit to the bulldozing which Sir Louis Davies’ meetings imply. The word bulldozing is not too atrong to deecribe theinterferences. It is not because the Federal Minister knows much about the Provincial situation that he goes to Belfast and Murray Harbor on this occa- sion. His long and continuous absence from the Island disqualifies him for eccur- ate discussion of current local topics. He goes to Belfast and Murray Harbor be- cause he is supposed to hold in his banda contracts and offices which he may bestow on those whose zeal in the coming elec- tion «6Cwill” =srise «=6to 6a auitable level. He goes there becanse there are fines imposed by the Administra- tion of the Department which he has the power to forgive to those who will work earnestly for the candidates of Premicr Parqubarson. Iz it not bad enough to have cond dates al Minister to improperly influence the votes of the electors? There are, we believe, scores of honest intelligent Liberals in Bel- fast and Murray Harbor whcse respect for fair play and honest ;litics will cause them to resent Sir Louis Davies’ appearance in their m dst under present circumetances, They will justly told Messrs. McKinron and Irving re- eponsiblefor theunblushing aitempt which is being made to unduly influence public Opinion in their favor. Belfast has been open for nearly four months. Mr. David P. Irving has been | cancocehens over five weess,—wiith road jobs going round as thick as raspberries in August, and alternate or loop railway lines unblushingly offeredas the price of im- portant settlements! Mr. Farquharson dared not issue the writ, nor Mr. Irving call a public meeting, until they were able s of a dy peptic 2 resources for bia own party purposes, — witnees the free excursion On the steam- er Brant, furnished last sammer at the public expense to the members of the fizzled convention of Bast Queen’e, or the use of Commander Spain and the steamer Druid to helpsout his electioneer- ing at Canso Cove,or the prostitution of the P. Here are Sir Louis Davies’ words in 1895, (from Hansard) : “When | brought this queation before the House in 1890, I thought it was desir-~ able to put this matter before the Gov- ernment in a business-like way. I had some consultation with a number of ens giveers and I was assured by them that a branch line from Peake’s station might be bailt which would give the necessary accommodation and do away with the necessity ot a bridge across the Hillsborough which would cost balf a mill‘on of money.” This isthe man whom David P. Irving brought from Ottawa at tne public «xpense to tell the prople of Belfast that Le is their benefactor in the matier of the bridge. McK nnen has secured to plead bis case at tbe pub- lic expense at the rate of $22.92 per day, including Sundays and travelling expens-e. be obtained through a railway terminating at Wood Islands.
