work since coming across here. Our
first job was to dig a trench in front
of ‘the British lines. Ot course we
did It by night and the Germans did
not know that we were there or we
would have had a Jolly time oi' it. T0
get up there we had to advance near-
ly a thousand yards by daylight un-
der a heavy shell fire. When lt got
too strong we stopped and dug our-
seves In-good work that digging.
You work your cntrent-Iiing tool like
fury and wish for fi good shovel all
the time. As soon as I got tleep
enough for comfort I lay down and
had a sleep and did not wukcu till we
got. the order to advance.
It is not nice working in u region
where there has been an advance as
it takes qulto a while to get ull. the
dead hurled. Of course one gets used
to such things but it is better to be
clear of thc-in. They serve to remind
you that life is very uncertain out
hore.
1 have not seen ony of the Artillery
boys or the sigiiallers but that is not
strange as the ditterent units keep

Take one large. ripe cucumber, pare
and remove the seeds. Cut it into
slices; wash and cut two bends of let-
tuce and place with the cucuiuber,_ In
one quart ot water. Add one onion
whole and one stalk ot celery, one
clove and two slices of lemon by way
of ilavorlng. Boil until the cucumber
is very tender. tlit-n remove the onion
and celery and rub the rest through ix
puree sieve. Add it pint of hot cream
thicken slightly' with a little butter
and tlour rubbed smooth, season and
serve with littlo toast squares.
