Tue schr. ‘‘ Edith Weir,” which went ashore at Naufrage on Wednesday night last, is insured in the Merchants’ Office of Canada for $3,000. She will be sold for the benefit of the underwriters on Thursday next. A Curistmas Tree will be opened at St. Joseph’s Convent, Pownal Street, this even- ing, and will be continued throughout the articles will take place on Wednesday even- ing. A Horrite Srory.—There has been great excitement at Bridgetown, Laurence- town, Kingstown, and in fact all around that part of the country over the case of a wealthy farmer in the upper part of An- napolis County, who, it was said, found a dead beef cow in his pasture, had the car- cass dressed and sold it to a gentleman-who is ranning a large lumber business in the} country. The men in the country were poisoned from eating the meat. The mat- ter has got into the Courts.—Berwick Star. Scnooner Goss AsHorE AND Burns.— The schr. Active, McFarlane master, from Halifax for Margaree, C. B., in making the entrance at south end of the Strait of Canso in a thick snow storm, on the night of the 13th, struck on a ledge and filled. The water getting to lime in cargo, set the ves- sel on fire. It was blowing a gale at the time from §.S.E. The vessel and cargo burnt to ashes. The crew saved only a small portion of their clothing. BARQUENTINE Lost aNnpD Two MEN Drownep.—The barquentine ‘‘ Jane Stew- art” from St. John, boundto Sydney, struck on Cranberry Head, Wednesday night last, the 12th, ina snow storm. Stood off and was thrown on beam emls. The mainmast was cut away Thursday morning. The Cap- tain, John Mitchell, and a seaman named Dorsay, of Dundee, got into a boat, when a sea struck her, throwing both of them out, and they were lost. “The remainder of the crew were taken off yesterday at noon by the brigt. ‘‘ Arichat West,” Capt. Lebuf, | and brought to Glace Bay. The vessel wa sinking when they left. STO ERE Died. This (Monday) morning, much and deserv- edly loved and respected by all who knew him, Mr. Henry Coorer, Printer, of this city, in; the 38th year of his age. He leaves a widow, five small children and a numerous circle of relatives and friends to mourn their sad be- reavement. His end was peace.
