IRVING'S NOMINATION, Tre Patriot states that Mr. Dayid Py y i } i Teoine j; at Atha | Belfast particaus* of the Farquharson Administration. Ve are disappoiated with Mr. Irving upor another point. It was al- | ways understood that he was “strong on to regard license fees as has accepted the who profeesed If he nomination, he hae accepted responsibility for Charlottetown and for what The Guardian calls “the frightful prevalence of drauk- the license of the sale of liquor in enpess”’ realized thereby, as well as for all the other misdeeds of the government. In view of this fact, conscientious Liberals cannot possibiy give him their support— they may perhaps stay at home on election day—and the intelligent peonle of the dis trict generally must vote againet him. THE GOVERNMENT'S GAME. PREMIER FARQUHARSON wanted money for ‘he treasury ; and he compromised his anti-blood-money principles by It is vaunted givipg Charlottetown a licease law. not unreasonable, perhaps, that he ehould expect the people of Belfast to condemn the Government’s political corruptiou and breaches of promise, because they want a branch railway! But we refuse to believe thata majority of them would for any such price, prove false to principle—go as deeply iato the mud as Premier Farquhar- son went in the mire. The majority of the people of Belfast is not to be bought and sold, even for the sake of a railway. It is worthy of note, however, that the Belfast brauch railway is not at al] depen- dent upon the Provincial Government. As @ result, largely, of the continued agitation led by Hon. Mr. Ferguson in the Senate and Mesers Martin and McDonald in th® House of Commons, an act of the Dowin- ion Parliament providing for the copstruc- tion of the railway and a bridge making connection with Charlottetown, has been paesed. _ “TURN THEM OUT.” Tue Montreal] Star says: “This ‘turning out,’ power ie the ecle aod sufficient weapon im the hands of the people. If they cannot get good govern~ ment with thie, then they will never get it; but if they use it fearlessly and without favour, they can get by its steady applica-~ tion just the kind of government they want.” We commend this remark to the consid~ Belfast. ! | i | answerable for, and that without a shadow of a chéuce of obtaining a cushioned eest in the big houee if the astute and accom plished Hector, the silver-tongued. orator, backed up by the party and fair but false } : : ° 8 if Low . as accepted the nomination of the | promises oO! the two Governments, every doubtful man and his horse and cart book~ /ed to work on the railway inrmediately eration of the people of Murray Harbor and | [f eo, Mr, Irving 188° after the election, or to be employed in and much ‘ess astute gentlemen than we sup-| around the coal mines of Wood Islands, new ‘roads opened and crooked roads straightened, jobs on roads, etc. These false promiees won't work this time, gentlemen. If in the face of al] this the now Judge. MacDonald gained his seat by the ekin of his teeth, what hop: can Mr. Irving have of being returned, only to the bosom of his family, and the comforts of nia new house. We would ask Mr. Irving how he’ is going toexplain away the groes insult ¢f- fered by our “ unsound Premier” to the noble Belfast electore,—the summary dis~ miesa] of their old friend, their worthy and faithful pastor, the efficient and ex- emplary Secretary of the Board of Educa- tion, the Rev. Dr. McNeill? When Don- ald was doing this bit of dirty work he didn’t reckon with the Highlanders. He snapped his fingers in the face of the Bel- fast electors,—and tow our time bas come and we will hit back with a ven- geance. Fellow electors of the noble Belfast District, the eyes of the people of the whole Island are watching us, to see if we (ike whipped curs) are going to tamely submit to this insult. Or wll wecome boldly and bravely to the polls on election day and wipe out this insult by casting our votes for our true and tried friend, honest A.A. McLean—and thns show our con tempi for the dishonest and disreputable Government lei by Donald Farquharson, BELFASTER. =—— — — enero NOTES AND COMMENTS. —The trade statement, which appeared in the last Canada Gazette, show that both imports aud exports continue to in-~ crease, and there is a corresponding in~ crease in the duty collected. The total exports for Angust were $20,157,697, of which $17,495,713 was produce of Canada and $2,661,984 produce of other countries. The total entered for consumption was $17,319,979, of waiich $9,923,991 was dutiable; $6,008,971 free goods, and $1,- 386,017 coin aud bnilion. Taking the two months compariog them with eame period last year, there is an increase of nearly five millions in exports and over half a million in exports. —Henry Clews, of New York, says : We are in no special need of gold ; the Treas- ury is surfeited with it ; gold is coming into our coffers from other parts of the world; our production this year, the Director of the Mint estimates, wil] in- | crease $7,000,000 to $10,000,000, and that of the entire world over $50,000,000. Evidently there will be no scarcity of gold and no great scarcity of money, save the inconvenience that may arise from the in» elasticity of our currency system. Congress can de nothing more Jikely to lengthen the present wave of prosperity than to give the nation the long expected and genuine currency reform promised in 1897.
