Brady with "Sinner." He figured that the best place to “try it on the dog" would be Sing Sing prison. The result is free advertising - H0! I0 speak of the gratitude of the convicts ~has fully exceeded his expectations. Brady offered a prize of $100 for the best criticism by an inmate of the play as performed in Slug Sing. Wil- liam Hooper Young, No. 54,020, who figured in a noted murder case in this city and who is now serving a lifo sentence as a consequence, proved to be the best critic. llc wrote in part: “The play ‘Bluiiers' appeared for its first trial before the select body of expert 'sinners' gathered together at the justly celebrated summer and win- ter resort (which by the way is no sin-e-cure). The jury was large and enthusiastic, and the verdict rendered was ‘Not wanting in all that ought to bring success” and the judgment 'Sentenced to a long life on Broadway with hard labor to handle the crowds around the box office.” " Young immediately turned over thc money to the Golden ltule Brother-- hood, the association intended to se- cure work for the convicts after their release. The critical review by No. 50,020 is probably disappointing by those who expected some genuine ideas of how real sinners would feel iii the pre- sence of a play which so closely touched a period in their lives. But the truth of the matter is that “Sin- ners” doea not tell anything new. It’s the old story that always seems hum- an in spite of the cynicism and doubt of today. The play is not an artistic one. The emotions are exhibited iii violent fashion; the tears flow in buc- kets full and the laughter is the kind that may be heard for a lond distance. The finer shades and nuance of feel- ing are absent. To be brief, it's “sob stuff.” But it gets over the footlights just as “The Old Homestead" and “Way Down East" do and the play is likely to be enjoyed by many who like to hearken back to the good old days when real. goldenlialretl angels and fierce, black-hearted vllllans were the best actors. The play deals with the temptations which befall two girls in the city and .g _ _, - 'th 60 70 1 ¢ " their return. later, to the family » ~`- ' *Q Hnoiiiiitts. Professor Ross iii addrcssln an attention of the farmers thc import- ingly charmed life of Private Leaske. First Battalion London Scottish, has attracted attention in England. Priv- ate Leaske has been lnvalided home with a severe flesh wound in the thigh, and notwithstanding his desperate ex- perience is reported recovering. When thc wur began, Private Leaske was ln busliiessiii Antwerp. There he remained until the investment of the city by the Germans. A German shell destroyed the house iii which he lived. When the fortress fell he beat a hasty retreat to England. Having served in the London Scot- tish, he re-enlisted in the First Bat- talion with wliich he was sent to France later. During an engagement when the rgiment was first under fire, three bullets pierced his great cont, but did hlni no injury. The following day, however, c fourth bullet wound- 'ed hini in the thigh. Ho was carried to a hospital. I FROM HOSPITAL T0 HOSPITAL. It appears that the engagement was .in 'Belgium and that he was taken to n field hospital near Yprcs. The Ger- mans shelled tho place und Private Lcuskc was removed with the rc- inainder of the wounded to another hospital. This building also the Ger- mans shelled. The young soldicr had a narrow escape from flying frag- ments of slirnpncl before carried to safety. His next place of retreat was far lie- yond the range of the German artill- ery, distance being a more effectual protection than the Red Cross cuslgn froni German shell fire. There he rc- maincd until with several others he was taken to England. lt was believ- ed that tlieii he would be harassed no more and would be left in peace until his wound was healed. Such was not the case, however. for he was sent to a hospital iii Hartle- pool. He had not been in the institu- tion 24 hours before the German rad- ing cruiser squadron opened fire on the city. With unerring accuracy the German guns speedily searched out the hospital which w.cts one of the buildings struck. Private Leaske then came to the conclusion that he would be much safer iii the firing line. He says he will not feel really safe and comfortable until he i'e;|oins his regi- ment. ‘ p - _ IZIZIZIIl.l.l¢lIl!IZIZIZIWZIIIZIJZIZI2n:|;n,nu » oo ~ n _ Household Economy 212: III I' How to Have the Bent Cong Remedy and Save $2 by Making It lit Home o .- 1 n n .I U;'\l» Cmlllll Inf-clit-iiics. us n rulv. r-untaiti ii _ L_ ~ ~.' i one cup warm water, stirred for 2 iiiiiiiitcs gnc you its good syrup as iiioncy cuii buy.
