This being the case a bint to the fire department may net be amiss, For the pur- ssc of hauling the sieam fire engines there are only four horses kept by the department— two for each engine. These in case a fire should break out woeald be useless. They could not haul the engime without the assist ance of six others -three for each engine. Then would it not be well for the department to secure the requisite number of horses im- mediately. A fire is liable to break out at any time, and may prove very disastrous if the engines cannot be conveyed to the tanks in short time. <p “foots RUsH IN.” —-It is time that Mr. Donald Farquharson’s friends outside of the House should look after him a little more carefully than they have been doing. Last evening he vehement'y denounced the City Bil now before the Fiouse of Assembly, be- cause he said it provided to retain members of the City Conneil in their places for a longer period th for which they were elected, gad contended that an immediate dissolution ei the Council should take place as soon as the Bil became law. Mr. McLeod allowed him to go on in this style for some until he had thorougly himself, and then ueietiy informed hia that so far was the hi i from | ‘ting the Councillors into their i th ut +hie ¥iiidS coinn titted seats for even a single day, that it provided for the clection of a new Lo neil vamertiately. fad any ther iember of the House spoken in this w ay, hie would have wisely taken a back seat or ‘‘kepta civil tongue in his head” for some days. The fire is supposed to haye origin- ated from ashes stored in a back kitchen. Before the inmates, who consisted of Mra. Kyau, her son and daughter, and the former's two small children--all of whom were sieep- ing up stairs—were awakened, The whole of the lower part of the house was wrapped in flames. The son's first attempt was to des- cend the stairway leading to the kitchen but the fury of the flames drove him back. Dash ing out a window he jumped to the ground followed by his sister. He next procured, a ladder from the nearest house, at the same time eummoning assisjance, reascended into the burning buildiny and dragged his mother, atupiiied with smoke and fear, out of bed and down the ladder. Returning again he suc- geeded in getting his oldest child out alive; but, sal to relate, the youngest child, aged about two years, was suffocated and partially burnt befere it could be rescued. Mrs. Ryan lies very iil under Lr. Beer’s care, from nerv- ous prostration and exposure, Miss Ryan had her ankle dislocate’. Nothing was saved ex- cept their night-clothing. Their loss we feel assure, as far as lies in human effort, will be made good by their sympathetic and charit- able neighbors. —Cum. to Patriot. hi llipencatuntiii By.
