Having sailed from Halifax aboard ”Tho , Newfound- land" on April 19th, she was met at Liverpool, England. by her hus- bsnd who is a chaplain with the Canadian Army in Germany. Dur- ing Capt. Phlliips' leave they vis- ited mamber. of his family in Wales and then together they mo- tored to Germany, driving through Belgium and. Holland. ; Mrs. Phillips remained in Ger- many for a month. Since no. liv- ing accommodations are available for wives of Cdnsdian Army offi- cers and men in Germany. Mrs. Phillips made her headquarters at a hotel in Hanover near where her husband is stationed. She de- rived much pleasure from driving in the country and visiting some of the old towns. On one oc- casion she and. Captain Phillips dined at on hotel built in 01494. The town in which it was located had been founded about 900. One of the highlights of her time in Germany was attendance at an exceptionally fine opera. In speak- ing of the beautiful music, Mrs. Phillips said that in German cit- ies one may go to a restaurant any evening and enjoy listening to a four or six string orchestra playing semi-classical music. Joined By Son At the end of a month in Ger- many, Mrs. Phillips returned to Wales where she remained until her son, Bill, a college student. joined her early in July. They spent one more week in Wales and then two weeks in London. that old city which never ceases thrill those who visit It. Among interesting things seen there were the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace, the crown Jewels, Covent Garden. museums, etc. They attended sev- eral ballets and saw street art- ists at work. They also had the privilege of attending services of divine worshinp in St. Paul's and in Westminster, Abbey. A most enjoyable experience for Mrs. Phillips and her son was n fifteen-day conducted tour of France. Switzerland, Italy and Austria. Outstanding among many things of interest and beauty seen on this tour were the wonderful old churches and famous paint- ings by the great masters. in Venice the sightseeing excursion was by gondola and on foot. In this unique city there are no street cars. automobile or bicycles Aiborton Bible Society Meeting ,- The Rev. E.M.B. Wheelock, district secretary .of the Bible So- ciety, addressed a gathering of in- terested peoplg in the Presbyterian Church at Alberton on Wednesday evening. l Reva Mr. Wheelock -described briefly the three departments of work done by the British and For- eign Bible Society-translation, pro- duction and circulation. In this present day the challenge of Com- munisrn makes the work of the Bible Society particularly difficult, interfering greatly with circulation in many countries. The work of Dr. Laubaoh in teaching iliitprate people to read within .. week or two presents the challenge of an open- ing door. The Bible Society must to read. In closing Mr. Wheelock quoted Dr. John R. Mott's statement that the Bible is still the great way of leading people to Christ. Two fine films were shown at the close of the meetlng.”"I'he Book of Books" showed how a Bible is made, and ”1'rontiersman" depicted the work of Caiporteurs in Western Canada. The opening worship was led by the Rev. J.R.. McMahon and the Rev. (3.8. Cunningham. Aiberton. A duet, "Have Thine Own Way. Lord”, was beautifully rendered by Mrs. G.B. Cunningham, and Mrs. Earl Atkinson. On motion officers of the local branch of the Bible Society were elected. They are: Presidnt, Mrs. Arthur Wilkie:-vice-president. Mrs. Vernon England: secretary-trea.s- urer, Miss Margaret Forsythe. The treasurer reported receipts to date as si9l.'l5. with one section yet to report. This is one of the best collections ever made in the district. The president. Auto Accident Al Alberion . A late model Monarch car from Charlottetown was badly damaged and a panel truck also from Char- lottetown was damaged when both were struck from the rear by a large transfer truck belonging to. a resident of Moritrose. , The accident occurred . early Wednesday morning and accord- ing to reports the driver of the car turned off.i.he road to drive into the electric light plant when he noticed that the road had been closed and he turned back onto the pavement. The panel truck was attempting to pass the car and. was just op- posite when both were struck by the large transfer. The panel end- ed up in the elders by the edge of . the road with considerable damage The transfer was also damaged on both fenders and had an axle bent. outside of bruises and cuts to the driver of the car no one was injured. :.,:.M.j. Leard re- turned to their home in Alberton on Thursday after a most enjoy- able visit to Calgary, Alberta. where they were guests of their daughter and son-iii-law, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Edmonds. ' Mrs. Learci left home five weeks ago and Mr. Leard joined 'her three weeks later. Both travelled by air. While in Calgary they took a num- ber of motor trips through the sur- ular interest included Banff. Lake Louise, Lake Moraine with its re- markable coloring, the Turner Vai- lcy oil field district, grain growing areas, the beautiful Mormon tem- ple at Cardston, and the Frank slide where in 1903 a gigantic rock slide destroyed the town of Frank. This great slide of seventy mil- lions tons of rock swept over two miles of valley leaving tragedy in its trail.
