By Guardiaifc Special Wire) MONTREAL, Dec, 19-Power stocks _pushed into leadership of the Montreal Stock Exchange tc- day on the heels of announcement the Ontario government had con- cluded a _new contract with Gat- ineau Power Company and was considering contracts with other companies whose agreements were annulled. Canadian Hydro Electric Pre- ferred, subjected to heavy buying in afternoon trading, advanced 3 points at '50, Quebec Power more than a point at I5 1-2 and Mont- real Power 3-4 at 32 1-2. B. C. Power A and B registered minor declines. Steel of Canada issues were strong leaders in early turnover as buyers acted on yesicrdayls an- nouncement oi payment of an ex- tra dividend on the common stock of 81.42 1-2 per share. The com- mon shares closed up 2 points at 57 after touching 58 1-2, its high- est level since 1929. Steel Preferred rose 1 1-8 at 48 1-4, Canadian Cai' issues were also in demand in afternoon trading. The common shares rose 5-8 at 6 7-B and the preferred 1-4 at 14. Buy- in8 was based on the announce- ment at today’s annual meeting that the company operated at a profit during November for the first time in four years. \ Metals sold narrowly off as Con- solidated Smeltcrs lost a point at 206 and International Nickel 1-4 at 43 1-4. Other groups were 11-. regular, Total sales were 17,273 shares; bonds 55,870. ~ Currencies (Canadian Press) NEW YORK, Dec. 19-A sharp drop in the French franc in the foreign exchange markets today followed the critical turn taken in the position of the French Cabinet which now faces the possibility of an early overthrow. The franc closed at 6.59 1-4 cents, off 9 7-8 of a cent. This brought the rate back to where it was two weeks ago, and raised the possibility of a resumption of the outflow of gold from the Bank of France. ' British currencies were relative- ly steady. The pound sterling closed unchanged at $4.92 7-8 while the Canadian dollar was able to reduce its discount from f -29-32 to 7-8 per cent. MONTREAL. Dec. 19-The pound sterling was the only major cur- rency to register an advance on Montreal foreign exchange today, closing up 3-32 of a cent at ,$4.97 5-16. The United States dollar lost 1-32 of one per cent at 7-8 per cent premium and the franc .04 of a cent at 6.65 cents. M T’L. Considerable declines in the London market for the mctals constituted a depressing factor and lower prices for the metal stocks on the New York board contributed to the display of weakness. The exchange index for the gods eased .20 to 117.73 and the miscellaneous ,mines index .81 to 117.65. _Volume was the smallest of the week.
