' Mr. J. A. Macdonald. dairy in- the for seen since he took up his present duties There has been an increase in the total make both of butter and cheese. The exact figures which prove this. however, are not yet ov- ailable. As to the quality. the Dominion grading figure will show apprxo- imately 99 per cent of the butter to be of no. 1 grade, and better than 96 per cent of the cheese to be of the same grade—a record which. it is safe to say. it would be hard to beat anywhere in the Dominion. - There spears to be a renewed in- terest in the dairy industry of this province, as farmers realize that it is impossible to prosecute farming economically. or indeed. successful- ly, without live stock, and dalrying is the king pin of the live stock in- dustry. The by-products of the dairyiug industry, moreover. are es- sential for the raising of young stock. as uiell as for the feeding of poultry and swine. Prices for Island products com- pare favorably with those of any province in Canada averaging as they do 21c per lb. for cheese and 40c for butter fat during the summer season. Our cheese prices are on a. par with those offered for Ontario cheese; while our butter invariably sold higher than the Montreal quotations. As to markets-Qo per cent of the cheese was exported direct to Eng- land via. Halifax. ' Oyving to the reduction in ex- penses due to direct shipm nts. the factories received a better price for their cheese. With regard to our butter, it is nearly all sold in the Maritime Pro- vinces. There are two reasons for this. Nova Scotia and New Bruns- _wick do not produce nearly enough for ‘their own use. and as the Mari- time trade demands the two pound print, in which. outside of the Mai"- itlmes, butter is not put up. the lion's share of the trade in the three provinces falls to Prince Ed- ward Island.
