Mr. Benn: I was very much m. terested in the statement.the mmm. t/er made s moment ago that in restricted areas only one-half of one per cent of the cattle are found to be still suffering from tuber- culosis. There ue, however through- out Ontario and other parts of the dominion several accredited herds whicfi have been under that scheme for some length of time, and I would ask whether _the same per- CSMBGG prevails in aocderlted herds as in restricted areas. Mr. Gardiner: Yes, the same per- centage would prevall in pure bued herds anywhere within the res- tricted adea. Mr. Benn: But there are accredi- ted herds outside the restricted ares. Mr. Gardiner: In fully accredited herds there are 'LN6 cattle free from disease; under process of ac- creditation, 1,384; not tested, 114. Mr. Benn: It comes within my knowledge that herds that have been free from tuberculosis for some length of time under the ac- credited herd system have been found to be again infected when the annual test is made. Could the minister give us any figures show- ing the number of accredited herds that have been-re-infected? li/lr. Gardiner: I understand that about twelve percent of the herds that are accredited afterward fall down under our test. Mr. Senn: And. they lose their cerhficate? Mr. Gardiner: Yes. and the pro- cess starts all over again. Mr. Douglas: Has the appropria- tion for free tuberculin tests been increased or decreased? Mr. Gardiner: It is ,lust about the SH.I'Ki.8. Mr. Douglas: Does the minister think it will be sufficient adequately to-take care of the applications for testing that are likely to be made on the basis of last years figures? Mr. Gardiner: Of course, as the Minister of Finance explained to the house the other day, these are general votes which are considered to be s ufficlent to carry on the usual, general activities of the de- partment, but if it is found advis- able-and a decision has not yet been made upon this point to go _on with this work more rapidly than the present vote would pro- fo additional funds would _u%.|§..........T....L.3,,.;5_,_..;..;.,.1.2._ ' ‘In House of Commons .
