RBD-HEADBD WOODPECKBR AT ROCKY POINT: Lois Doan My seven year old son was the first to ask me, "Mom, what kind of bird is this on our tree?" Of course, the last thing I supposed it would be was a Red-headed Woodpecker! It was after the sunflower seed I had out on our willow tree feeder. This happened around 5 to 5:30 p.m. on the 26th of May. It stayed close by in a wooded lot across the street, back and forth to the feeder for the 27th and the morning of the 28th. I could not get within 20 to 25 feet of it. It was so skittish it would fly off at the slightest disturbance, hence the picture is distant. We were all thrilled to be able to see this woodpecker and learn about it and felt quite privileged to see such a rare bird! Editor's Note: Lois included a photograph of the woodpecker, an excellent way to confirm a rare sighting.
