Bell Manufacturing Co’ Spanish Knights Looted by the Irish. Vhe Century has an article on ‘‘The Spanish Armada,’’ written by Williana Frederic Tilton. An introducticn is fur- nished by Captain Alfred T. Mahan. Mr. Tilton says: The huge Venetian Trinidad Valen- cera, having sprung a desperate leak, ran for the Irish coast, and soon found herself off O’Dogherty’s country, per- haps in Lough Swilly. Part of the crew swan ashore; others huddled into an ald leaky ship’s boat. A native rowed ont toward them, and being promised a bagful of ducats and jewels helped land thove in the leaky boat, while another Irishman, bent on richer spoil and heed- less of the cries for help, rowed straight for the wreck, which went down while he was looting in the hold. No sooner had the Spaniards got ashore than *‘ wild people,’ and even the queen’s soldiers, fell upon them, robbing them of their ‘money, gold buttons, rapiers and ap- parel’’ and slaughtering numbers of them in cold blood. Butone of the ‘)’Donnells came to the rescue, hada great fire built for some of the officers and seemed to ‘pity their case, espe- cially O’Donnell’s wife. ’’ One of these officers tells how he was lodged in the cabin of a fellow who sold ale and aqua vita and was ruffling it in a stolen ‘red cloak with buttons of gold.’’ Inthe night he robbed his guest of 200 ducats, and the officer heardthim ‘‘beat out barrels’ heads and fill them with plate, money and jewels.’’ The Spaniards, having saved no provisions, were forced to buy a few wretched horses, ‘which they killed and did eat, and some small quantity of butter that the commen people brought also to sell.” Has Ne Friends, Village Cousin (showing his city relative around the hamlet) — That quiet, harmless looking man on the op- the church and one of the most prblic spirited, kind hearted he is the hardest hated and most indus- triously despised person in the village. City Cousin—How does that about? Village Cousin--Why, you see, he has kept a diary continuously since 1871, conscientiously and methodically jotting down from time to time all the im portant and unimportant happenings, eptsodes and incidents in our village life, marriages, births, the state of the weather, condition of the crops, what So-und-so paid for such anc such a house, and so on and so forth, including the gist of everybody's political utterances. And whenever the revered oldest inhab- itaut says that thisis the coldest, hot- test. wettest or driest season in ten years, or a lady makes an assertion re- garding her age, or some one declares he paid a certain sum for his property, or a local politician cries out that he has always worked for ihe success of some particular party and never scratch- ed his ticket, the man with the diary pulls out his little book and calmly calls them down. as if it was his bound- en duty to do s0. Mr Albert Chevslicr, the famous ‘‘coster’’ impersonator, was once the recipient of a letter from a gentleman who bad heard him sing his famous song, ‘‘My Old Dutch.’’ The corre- spondent wrote that when he entered the theater that night he had intended to become divorced from his wife, ow- ing to constant disagrecinents and trou- bles with her, but the song so affected hina that he resolved to do nothing of the sort, but to make an effort toward a newer and better life. Mr. Chevalier stated that the note evidently came from an educated man, and he had every be- lief in its genuineness. When Hawthorne’s celebrated ‘‘Scar- let Letter’? was being performed, a young man wrote a very impressive let- ter to the management. ‘‘I entered the theater last night,’’ he said, ‘‘witha very great sin in contemplation. I need not go iuto details, but it will suffice to say that the deed I had in my mind would have ruined a home in this city. But when the play was over I saw only | too clearly how terrible are the conse- quences of sin, and I thank God that I can now affirm that I have put it out of my mind forever.’’—London Standard.
