: ‘ i j : E DAILY EXAMINER, - ~~” TH (Continued from first page ) round which the village is built, some — closures formed by palisades, and marked by small wooden crosses. In response to was told that these were my enquiries, | hose bodies had been the graves of sailors w east ashore during some of the storms which so oiten occur here. Nothing more sad ean be imagined than the lonely graves of unknown men, within hearing of the cruel sea which first took their lives and then cast their bodies upon the rocks, he poor fishermen who found them gave of their time to dig their graves (no easy work on that rocky mountain), and with simple faith placed over them, as though to guard the lonely spot, a little cross, which the Greeks so beautifully call ** the silent intercessor”; and, their wanderings forever over, there they lie, few knowing ol their last resting place ;—who they were none know. It may be that in some village in sunny France, where the grapes grow ipen the hillside, and the girls with naked feet tread the rich juice from the grapes, some mother hopes that her son may even vet return, to lighten the load which 80 heavily presses upon the aged. But the cruel sea and the rocky mountain keep their God grant these secret, and she hopes in vain. strength to her, and to the sleepers rest and peace. From this village with its sad associa- tions, we drove to where the codfish is set out to dry preparatory to being shipped to France. Acres of ground have been levelled and are covered thickly with large stones, washed clean and white by the rain, and on these the fish are spread in the sun to dry The scene resembled nothing so much as a huge hay-field, with hay incock. Here some men were gather- ing up the fish and carrying them to others who stacked them into small piles just like hay-cocks. Others were turning the fish so that they might thoroughly dry. From this field we drove home. Our strange equipage excited no wonder among the people. Nothing impressed me more than the thorough courtesy of the Frenchmen, laborers. As we passed them every hat was doffed as thongh we had been visitors of importauce, when it was only their own innate politeness. When I go away from this quaint little place I shall carry with me the know- ledge of much that was strange to me be- fore; yet I think that amid the barren and forlorn appearance of the Island, the pecu- liarities of its inhabitants, the heartfelt lunging which seems to possess one and all cf them to be able some day to visit their beloved la belle France,—that which im- pressed me most and which I shall remem- ber longest will be the recollection of the lonely graves of the unknown sailors whose bodies rest so quietly beneath the little crosses on the side of the mountain that overlooks the quaint little town of St. Pierre. fishermen and Ast St. Pierre, Aug. 10, 1889. 1889. Do You Drink Ice Water? refreshing drinks in) warm delicious is undeniable, That ater in copious draughts when & person is overheated is injurious, not to say dangerous, is also und niable. But that the free drinking of water In some form in hot weather must be avoided, is deniable, and is one of the greatest popular errors extant. When a person is perspiring freely from every pore, a vast amount of water 18 drawn from the body, which must be re-supplied, or great injury is being done the physical health, and the foundation of some of the worst forms of kidney disease is being slowly, but surely leid, Why ! someone will exclaim, that is just hat causes kidney troubles, drinking water freely which contains so much lime. Wrong again So long as the water drank is freely carried through the system, and converted in 1ts passage to the naturally acid reaction of the urine and perspiration, ho danger can occur by deposits of urea or lime in the kidneys and bladder, because they remain perfectly in solution, and are ' of the body instead of remaining it. Literally, they are washed out of the body by the copious draughts of water (that most per- fect of all known solulents), same as a series of pipes are ‘‘flushed” with water to clean them. A clean body is never diseased, Do not drink ice cold water, but pure cool water: a little lemon juice will improve the effectiveness. Plain soda water with a little acid is also excellent. If from drinking too much ice water you have stomach cramps, of are “‘water-logged,” as it is called, or are at- tacked with Cholera Morbus, Summer Com- plaint, Diarrhcea,or Dysentry, do not resort to alcholic stimulating drinks, which irritate rather then soothe and allay the inflammation which has caased the trouble; but adopt the practice of taking daily just before retiring, during July and August, one teaspoonful of Johnson's Anodyne Liniment in a little sweet ened water, which will prevent all such at- tacks and ill effects from ice water. In fact, a little pamphlet, sent free to anyone, by I. S. Johnson & Co., Boston, Mass., contains a vast amount of information about treating those summer troubles.—dy6i wyli.
