Ami. to U A SPEGIAL l.EGl0ll snow Heading the main feature of a five-bout boxing card at the Sum- merside Curran and Briggs base- ball diamond tonight. Harry Poul- ton. Island welterweight boxing champion, will face one of the toughest battles of his career when he tangles with Roger Whynott. former Canadian middleweight champion. in a ten-round. non- title contest. 0 0 O The event will be the first open air boxing card to be held in the Province for a good many years and is expected to draw a large crowd of fight fans from all points. Supported by four good preliminary matches. the main go, should be one that will pack plenty of action for a smart even- ing of boxing entertainment. 0 O O Credited as being probably the smartest boxer that the Island has produced in the past few years. Poulton has been making a name for himself in fistic circles both here and other points of the Mar- itlmes during Ty: past three years or more. and this year alone has added a long list of victories to his credit. In. fact Harry has been so successful in cleaning up in his own division. that he is running out of good opponents in the wel- ter bracket. and that is one of the reasons why he will be stepgping out of his class tonight to meet the experienced and hard hitting Whynott. . Although many fans here feel that Harry will prove too smart for the Mahone Bay middleweight who lost a ten-round decision to Cobey Mccluskey here at the Forum on July 7th, others have the view that Whynott might be a little too rugged for the light" Poulton. Those who saw Wn.Vn0';l perform here on July 7th dont need to be reminded of the fact that he can hit hard and is cap- able of absorbing all the lJl1n15h' .ment the other fellow has to offe: and still come. bfckg TOT 17101”?- But like Mccluskey Tr? that Dell”- formance. Poulton will be a hard target. to find. and it doesnt matter how much artillery an opponent carries it he can't connect with the target. This is a big factor in Poul- ton's favor. He is shifty and hard to hit. and at the same time Packs plenty of power with either hand and is capable of putting them in fast. and often. 0 0 Both fighters are aggressive in their mode of doing battle. but are slightly different in their tech- niques. Whynott likes to get in close and rough it with short. hard punching. While Poulton, although no slouch at. infighting. Prefers to do his gunning at long range and keep continually on the move. which style will prove successful will depend on two main features as far as this writer's score card is con- cerned. If Poulton can keep Why- nott at long range most; of the time and not let him crowd him too much. he will likely out- point. the former middleweight tltllst. But on the other hand, if the Mahone Bay boy gets in often enough at close range. then watch out for fireworks that is liable to end up in a knockout. . . . It. is not yet mid-August. but hockey talk is in the air already. In fact it has been that way ever since early surnm when local officials started talking about Charlotte- town's re-entry into M. S.
