Business Manager. lil lilllllillll Glllllluill, MONDAY,” MARCH, 4,- Iwi. ` A 7 mon AND sneer.. Iron and steel are of such universal use in thc civilized world that the recent movements in the way cf combinations of leading companies engaged in the manu- facture must be of interest to the gen- eral reader. The past quarter of acentury has seen such development of iron and st-eel production in the United States as has placed that country in the lead of Great Britain both in the quzintit-y produced and in the cheapnesu with which the product can be put upon the ' market. At the head of the two greatest combinations for the production of the _ king of metals stood`themulti~milliona.ires Andrew Carnegie and John D'.Rockefeller. never before attained in industrial enter- prise. Mr. Pierrepont Morgan recently ‘ succeeded in convincing them that a com- bination of their colossal interests would be more profitable than a business war, and so .the famous Morgan Syndicate was formed, combining the Carnegie, Rock- feller and other interests, nine large con- cerns in all, under one control. It is the greatest manufacturing com - bination yet eifected in the world, _with a. capital stock of $300,000,000. But it by no means includes all the iron and steel indus- tries of the nation. None of the southern companies are included, and in all there are twenty-three large c0rporatioris!in the United States still outside of the M. rgfin Trust. But the great trust will control 11,030,000 ot the total of 19,000,030 tons of ‘ore annually produced in the Lake Superior region, nearly half the pig iron produced in the United States' will be made in its furnaces and it has68 per cent of the steel rail/ pro- duci_ngcu.pucity of- the entire country. These are the advantages it -begins with and the experience of the past shows -that the combination once formed on so large a scale and with such vast control tends to absorb or drive to the wall many, it notall ot its competitors. It is easy to see that the new oombinr tion vi ould naturally desire to bring with- now rapidly developing at Sydney, and I S that an edort has been made to that end 8110011! ll? be: the public have been informed. That the Sydney industry is not yet absorbed we can "believe, although' the danger up-_ y; prehended by the public may not yet altogether past. There are however good' reasons to hope that this gieat' Ganadian T DF- "Pi¢1'°¢'8 "£1 Pellet# industry auch .this tion even with the ooiossal .steels which has across the in. A. J. mmm. For such it market the Pittsburg product would have to pay $2 p-er ton for Even then it Europe were its market the Sydney metal- would have .fthe advantage of being 1,000 miles nearer its dual destination. The meaning ot thi-. will be palpabiy apparent when it -is re- called that the present price is from $18 to $80 per ton. In fact the Morgan Trust, strongas it is. might have occasion to tear the Sydney competition even inthe American market, it Hr. Mox_ham’s figures are correct. The advantage would be sutllcient to offset the high protective tariff of the United States. It is doubtless desiribie on behalf of the general consumer that the Sydney works should not be absorbed by the great American coinbine, but on the other hand, if the aiimniages possi=s_~c;l by Sydney are even approxiniutely as izrent as Mr. Moxharn has set forth, there could be no danger of the operations at Sydney being eitnernbfindoned or curtailed. There is a present, und increasing dem ind for iron and steel in excess of the organizel ineaiis of supply, and the great trust, if it should come into control of the Sydney works would naturally carry on its operations imostlargeiy at those points where pro- duction would be most ecoioniicai. There iisalarge market in the J, Dominion which under the existing tariff would be wholly controlled from Sydney,a.nd for the supply of the greater markets of the world it would still have those great advantages mentioned by Mr. Moxbsm and above quoted. There is therefore nothing in what has already taken place or may be .now in progress which, so far as we can see, will hinder the growth, development and success of the great enterprise which has been planted at the eastern extremity of Canada. ._ reputation even at the cannon’s_mouth.” _ _ Late hours, the ` f breathing of a vitiated atmosphere, rich A foods, and irregular ~_4.
