But there ure others who are less scrupulous and who will not hesitate to wink at and encour- age the use of unlawful methods on Doll- ing day. And theic"iare in other cases candidates, who themselves will desire to observe the law and the principles of fairness, yet. whose agents will be animat- ed by a strong desire to win regardless of the means they use. And there is un- fortunately a minority of the electorate ise of their votes and some who are eve base enought to solicit purchasers At such ii time it is fitting that every honest and patriotic citizen, and especial- ly every Christian elector should set his face as a flint. against those degrading practices which are the shame of Cana and a menace to the ,welfare of the Dominion. Much can be done b make both intending bribers land intending vote-sellers ashamed of such a sacrifice of moral principle. Much may treating, too prevalent in elections, if t honest Christian electors Will but do their duty and stand out nianfully against it. Let it once be known that briber and bribed are viewed with honest scorn by the better elements in our country, and a great check and preventive will be im- posed against corrupt practices. But more than this is needed, We have good and wholesome laws against the abuses and corrupt practices above re- ferred to, and heavy penalties are pre- scribed for those who violate the purity of an election. Fines, imprisoment and dis- franchisement are the penalties laid down. But hitherto these necessary and wise provisions have been little regarded. The law, except as it applies to candi- dates zind their agents, has been allowed to sleep, and the evil has grown great, Let itouce be known that in every polling division there is one honest man,resolute- ly determined to see that the law is obeyed or offenders punished and three fourths of the evil would quickly disap- pear.In this our better citizenship has been at fault. Let it now he known that "the law hath not been dead, though it hath slept." Let it be known in advance that this time the penalties for corrupt prac- treating-will be punished with the full rigor of the law. Very largely the question whether or not we are to have a pure election rests country. Let _,them but be nrmly and minedly resolved to punish infractions have been in past elections. In this regard THE GUARDIAN may be counted upon to practice what it preaches, and to bring to light every-vgell authenticated instance of corrupt practices that comes to ou Fourdes Engineers, Machin- _ election- ists and lioiler-makers. » Qelm Navigation Co's Wharf.
