I rntnar, Nov: 1.19% - THE SiTUAT\0N IN ONTARIO- _._____-- Much interest was felt in the recent by- elections at the Soo and in Muskoka, lOntarlo. The unexpected happened and each of the two seats went opposite to what it stood before, leaving the strength at partie-1, Liberals 50; Conservatives 46, T with one seat, Renfrew, vacant. As ‘things new stand the government has a majority of four in a House of 08. At the general elections of May, 189A it was found that the returns stood, Liber- als 51; Conservatives 47. Within a few days Mr. Munroe, a Liberal member, died, reducing the maiority by one-50 to 47. Then the recount in Lennox cave the seat to the Conservate side, reducing the Government majori‘ y to one and the count stood 49 to 48. Then two Conserva- tives and one Liberal were unseated by the courts and there were left 48 Liberals and 46 Conservatives. Three by~elect.ions in January, 1908 were all carried by the Government and in- creased the Government majority to dve, the party strength being 51 to 46. Other chances, including the Ganiey conversion _ enabled the Government for the time to claim a uiaiorlty of seven. but he after wards recanted. Two by-elections in February left the dgures 52to 45, then another Conservative was unseated, leav- ing a ministerial majority of eight. Then the House met and Gamey re- turned to the Conservative fold, and be- fore the close of the session Dr.Bridgelaud I i 'i I 6. L. With a majority of on ly four but with great tenacity, the Ross Govern- ment is holding on and may probably be able to do so for some time to come, if not. till the end of the Legislative term. ¢ The Patriot tells that the ministers at Ottawa will take a brief holiday “before returning to discuss all the parliamentary appropriations." So far as the appro- priations ar_e concerned the time fcr Cabinet discussion is before they are rc- oommen ded to Parliament. The preferential tariff of the Dominion is now to be extended to South Africa in response to the advances made by that country. The Guardian has from the Bret expressed its approval of this method of extending trade within the. Empire and we are glad to take note of the enlarge. e ment of its scope from time to time. The much-discredited petition in the Carver case is still occupying the pub‘ic - _ attention. We publish two short letters , today on the subject. One of these is from Henry McKenzie of Southport, who de- nies signing the petition, but admits that he authorised the use of his namn, for which he gives “ an explanation.” The other letter referred to from Henry Wood of Pownal. is a dat denial of hav- Oomplaiutls made by travellers that Bosonand Yarmouth as well aa from cqppar i»Kantville arriveatTruro from Mteen to Bl'°°_klI\\ R-“id TRN" twenty-live minutratolate too make tie B‘mm°’°&0m9= , ' _ __ .‘_ \_» U.P.R_ 12|] required connection _both morning aud__¥.'_¥m_komu_._l_ _ ».. . ug evening.
