You did not walk in halls of fame Or rule the life of man You ruled the life God gave to Isonablc to assume they are still puddling their time away in some flooded swamp or swale. In mid-August in the late thir- ties Cpl. Heath and I have stood between Curtis’ and Don- nelly‘s creeks at Pisquid Pond when the up-draft of incoming black ducks could be felt. In a half hour one late August even- ing we estimated between eight and ten thousand blacks. pass- ed overhead in a half hour. I have stood on the banks of the Pisquid River, as the first light of dawn lit the \vings of squadron after squadron of black ducks pass- ing overhead reminded me aerial trains threading the black void oer'head. I have issued re- peated warnings in this column that the end comes suddenly with respect to any species of bird or animal once their num- bers drop below a specified sa- fety margin. Its a known fact at the moment that an approxi- been shot during periods of bit- ter below zero weather when they had no other choice but to crowd into open air-holes and springs. We are paying the price now with respect to our local hatch. Even their northern breed- Opening Duck, «Goose Year Is Getting Mighty Close caused the cagey Hun any decl- minating casualties and this al- so applies to the wily Ring- necked pheasant. The use of cal- cium chloride to cut away icy surfaces during the winter mon- ths has killed more I-Iuns in a single day than were shot in open season, by legitimate hunt- ing methods, over a period years. Information is piling up over Hun coveys being practi- cally wiped out. and in others completely eliminated. by a sin- gle feeding of calcium chloride pellets swallowed in mistake for grit. Grit acts in place of teeth for Hums and pheasants and this list also includes farmyard hens. If a sizable delegation of de- dlcated sportsmen waited on the Minister of Highways and recommended that proper spreaders be installed on all calcium chloride trucks instead of the shovel method that passes it out in a sort of hit and miss method. I am sure, if such a recommendation was presented in a courteous manner, and the reason for this request being ex- plained as a conservation ino- vation. I am of the opinion their request would be considered and put into effect without un- due delay. I also had to suppress a smile when I noted that no change was suggested in the daily bag limit. Perhaps they have reach- ed the same conclusion as this columnist came to years ago. that bag limits. . .either day or seasonable. . .look nice in print but achieve no worthwhile con- servation result. It has always been the boast of the Fish and Game Association that they are a non-political organization. I'd suggest that this organization hop off its high pedestal and ing grounds have been invaded. We may be agreeably surpris- ed on the opening morning but the odds are against such a; happening at the moment. I .THE EASY WAY OUT . ‘ Many alleged conservationists! adopt the easy way out whenl advocating measures designed; to bring back any species of upland game birds or waterfowl once it has dropped in numbers below the safety margin. The reduction of the open season on Huns and pheasants. . .from October 1st to November 11th to October 23rd to November 3rd. .was a commendable: move.
