A Very Good Showing. Orrawa, Aug 26 The Intercolonial Railway statements for the last fiscal year, just compiled, show that the revenue was $2,945,441, and the expenditure $3,439,377—a deficit of $493, - 936. This showing is $200,000 better than the previous fiscal year, It is gratify- ing to know that the past two months are also satisfactory as regards revenue, and the prospects of attaining a good balance sheet for the current year are at present bright. THE ENGLISH ELECTIONS. Protest of the Press Against Kibblesdale’s Appointment. Lonpon, Aug. 25. Gladstone has been re-elected for Mid- lothian without opposition. The election in Derby for a successor to Sir William Vernon Uarcourt, Chancellor of tha Exchequer, was held yesterday. Sir William's opponent was Farmer Atkin- sen, whose candidature ‘he Liberals treated asa jest. Sir William was re-elected by 6.505 votes to 1,519 for Atkinson. The Star and Chronicle each protest against Mr. Gladstone refilling the post of Master of the Royal Buckhounds by the appointment of Lord Kibblesdale. Winn and his son Joseph, of Aapy Bay, were crossing North Harbor from Dingwall to their heme on the op- posite side, on Monday evening about dark, when a squall struck them and cap- sized the boat. Both occupants were thrown out, and swam for the shore about two hundred yards away. The son landed in an exhausted condition, but the father was drowned, having probably taken cramps.
