BIG DEMAND FOR PELT$.- Dr. Leo Frank yesterday received word from New York that there is a very big demand -for silver black fox skins of’ the second and' third grades. He is advised that the New York market could take up this year as many as `five thousand pelts if the Island can produce them, and that under the circumstances the advice is to kill all foxes that are und'esi.‘lable’ in a ranch and have them ready so that they may be sold at either the New York or St. Louis' sales. This means that the pclts must. reach those cities by at lefast the eighth of January. It is advised that ranchers ship the pelts to the Fur Sales Board in Char- lottetown as they have the best fac- ilitil-;»s to market. same and are get- ting prices that are very satisfactory. Great praise and credit is due Mr. Chester Mcbure. who is practically the head of the Fur Sales Board and' is giving his entire time and' atten- tion to tile fur industry of this is- land and deserves every encourage- ment from the Island ranchers. -THE HOLY ClTV.- A high-class conceit was enjoyed by a large crowd of citizens in Sumlnerside, Decem- ber 19. 1916. under the management of our local artist, Mrs. John J. Dec. 20 -The American steamer Columbian was torpedoed be- cause, being _once released after stop- page by a German submarine, she sent out wireless warnings of the submarine zone of4_operations in vio- laton of neutrality. This was the German reply to-day to the American inquiry on the vessel as made in a note handed to Charge Greg and by him cabled to Washington. (Special to the Guardian.) Mu5ic LONDON, Dec. 21- Absolutely' fi startling surprise was the first feel ing in Great Britain aroused by Pres ident Wilson's note appealing to the belligerents to discuss Germany's peace terms. The Government was surprised and frankly admitted so; members of parliament ' were equally surprised. » l When the news spread through both houses during the afternoon session, newspaper offices were' surprised and undoubtedly the public will be equally surprised when they read the Ambas- sador Page‘s statement to the For- eign Oiilce in‘ the morning papers. All information from America in the past few days botll in de-spatchee from the usually best in- formed Washington c'orres~pon'- dents, and advices from banking busi- ness ilrms said that the President had no intention of taking any step toward peace or making any move in European affairs. When he trans- mitted Ge'l'lnany's note to Great Brit- ain without comment it was assumedl that this action represented his gen- eral attltude toward the European sit- uation. Most of newspapers colmn:le'nt- ed upon this course with satisfaction. The tenor of their comment tomorrow will be that Premier _Lloyd Georgels speech and the epeeches of Russian, French, and Italian statesman have amrmed tile Allies' position and that untill the German Government gives notice of the nature of the proposals which it would bring to the conference the Allies cannot accept an invitation' 'to sit around a European table for discus- sin of its terms. l (§pi!`olal to the Guardian.)
