Tan CARNIVAL comes round with us now in the cycle of time just as regularly as Christmas or New Year's Day; and the roparations for it ds light the ladies mora, in proporuon !) haps, than wry other festi- yal in the year. Tae feminine mind is always fond of display, and a certain amount ef innocent rivalry exists among the fair ones as to Wao will have the han is ML gf dress, or look the most becoming init, L is econselin f to their dear little heart 3, ai least, that erci and every one of them be-| hieves that her cress looks the best, and | and that she, and she alone, is the centre of attraction andadmiration. We certainly think that they adopt a very happy way of settling this little ditheulty, as it 1s one we would not like to deeide for them, The success of the Carnival depends, we think, not so much on the richness of the drasses, the costliness of the materials, or the cro wded Rink, as on the deeora- tions of tho Rink itself, the beanty and symmetry of the ornamentations, the bril- Lant ligits and reflections, and the va riety of ths costumes. — Wauen we heard the names of the desorating committee, from tieir well known skill and taste we con cluded that nothing would be teft undone that skill could do, or ingenuity possibly devises, to make the Rink look well, and that the interior would present a s mnewha different ap “acancs from fie Carnival of last year. Bent on securing a comfortable place, about a qiarter to eight last night, we arrived at tae ‘‘Citizeas Skating Rink,” but, alas, for the realization of earthly expectations ! We founl a grest crowd there before us, all, no doubt, with tho same object in view a; we hal ourselves, However we bear no malice, and whoewer found our com/orié cle gat was welcome to it. We did'nt. After considerable pushing and_ elbowing we syucezed ourselves into 4 position o! great discomfort, between two ladies— neither very young nor very old—but jus’ about that ag2 when theirm friends ara get ting a little anxious about their future. Althongh evincing from the very earliest perio 1. that we can recollect, a fondness for female society, we could very well have dis pense l with it on this occasion. They were som:what solid re‘‘pres’entations of the gentler sex, and seemed in no way incline: to lean on thems} slyes, altho Az tisy ware evileatly quite oll enough to have a little golf-relitws, and strength enoagh to swypor. exe) other, even under more trying circum stances. They showed not tho slightes sign of e ving the great weigh’ of responsibility that restel on ws. A liberation from our very confined circum stances was prodably effected by the stranu- 0:23 exortions w2 invie to get ou our note boo aa! pencil, for, in the coura> of thes: exertions, we felt otc elbows com> s2vera! — tions forcibly repeated. The upsho) war that ws soon found ourselves in easier cir- cumstaness anil able to look arogial and note th: ef:c: of the decorations. Certain ly they ware a success, antl almost ex czedel excitations We could not imazine we were in the oll plain Rink, nor did we want to think we were. A‘ eigit o'clock, when as by waive of magician’s wand, the empty and darkened Rink was suddenly filled with p2ople and ma te all ablaze wi h light, thé sight was mignificent. The bright meteor lik» rays of the many colored tights coruscan’ and radiating from the sparkling gold and silver tins:] of the handsome costumes, mingling with the flashing brown, black and blue orbs of the skaters, made it ap pear as if we were present at some panto- minic transformation scene or within some beautiful fairy grotto. Watching the evo- lutions of the Grand Amazonian March, we saw the people of every known nation and tongue, representatives from the snowy plains of the chill north to the scorching heat of the torrid zone ; from the northern homes of the silvery, crackling mountain streams, to the dense weed-matted source of the congo ; from the land of lofty min- arets and black-eyed Houris to the wild western prairie lands of the unfettered red man, gathered together from the north and the. south, from the east and the west, to take partin our Annual Carnival; skating in and out, twisting about, right and left, down the centre and up the sides ; per- forming evolutions too dazzling for eye to follow. At last, this indiscribable whirl of nations; this bewildering babel of dresses dissolves and singly, or in twos or threes, forming the strangest alliances, they glided on the smooth ice, keeping time with the soul-inspiring strain. of the Band. We would follow the usual way of calling it ‘‘The Charlottetown Brass Band, were it not that that expression is in dis- pute; some holding that the: style and name is derived from the prevailing metal in the composition of the instruments ; others, that it is a nick-name on the per- ing themselves a Band at all. As the differ- ent characters sped on their way past our position, we might, with some fairness, use an old and often-repeated expression of the Press, and say, ‘‘Where all were good, it would be invidious to particularize.” Yet some of them struck ns as being better than others. We recognized some from the com- pleteness of the character they assumed, and the clever way they sustained them ; others, we knew by report and through their labored efforts to act the characters and the chief mournera, i black, fallow his remains, Blrains of the Dead Maren, from a ghrill fate, tn the smoking room, howaver he ia waked to life avain, nor doas his suid. den resurrection sgas.a to Impress him at all rs . v away on the giddy wing of ancy to the dreamy land of the Oriental: as the darting Lalla Rhook, ralaine the wd tural voil that frin ° n the deepest. to the grand | DesBrisay, Miss Gertrude M. .. Now she is joined by the en- chanting ‘** Ksmiralda,” and gliding away is lost to our view in the giddy, whirling throng. ‘Three pretty little pink dominos ‘“allin a row” next catch our eye as they merrily trip along. We wish they would lift the masks and disclose their features. fhe ** Roumanian Girl” has found a valiant wiy and protector in the gallaut ‘Red Cross Knight.” Woe to tho weakened Moslem if the brave Knights of the Cross uafurl their Christian bauner. From. the ‘‘subline to the ridiculous” we fall, as “Folly” linked with the ‘‘Devil” him- aslf is led cff im the mazy dance, in figures in the centre of the scene. We scarcely think the bright, sparkling, ptetty little ‘‘Advertiser,” ‘‘tho’ selling »¥,” felt herself bound to “‘ acczept the lowest tender,” even though she promised srert bargaims and great reductions. We think the handsome Dr. Fautus knows a sarguin when ha sees it. The ‘* March of intellect” has ats last fairly reached our littls Island, and no less than three ‘lady rraduates ” entered the compstive arena last aight. Tie sourtely ‘* Hamlet” mourning the un- timely loss of ‘‘ Ophelia,” evidently courts an alliance with the beautiful ‘““Daug iter of the Royal House of Bavaria.” Th: geacefally formed ‘Diana,” weary with hunting, has ‘‘picked up” a clown. ‘The ‘*Photograph Album” and the ‘‘ Sorap Book” would be ornaments at any drawing room table. We missed the large lustrous eyes of the “‘ Moorish Princess” this a2a3on, and the high and mighty “ Cid” has dropped from the magic circle. Tne ‘Ra- jah of Hydabad” is reported reading for honors. We trust that the ‘Corsican Brothers” do not cherish a vendetta against the Rink, though they were absent. ‘The manly physique of the ‘Colonel of Volun- teera”’ of a former Carnival was absent; but was represented by his handsome subaltern. ‘*Couer de Lion” appeared as brave and as strong as when he led his army of Crusaders t» fight the Saracens for the Holy ‘* Sep- ulchre.” But where was his Berengaria ~ his fair Navarrese Bride? Mayhap on her way to Scicilly to juin her warlike lord— he flicting lavishly in the meantime. The “South West Wind” fanned the heavy air a‘ times with’ his gentle breeze, and old ‘Rip Van Winkle” looked as if he would never go to sleop agiin. ‘Kings’ and ‘‘Peasants,” conversing on terms of in- timacy, marked the levelling char- acter of the . age, ‘Bluff Hal” looking as merry and portly as when he won the affections of the gentle Catherine. We are glad, for the quiet of the Rink, that he left his wives at home, for he was evi. dently looking cut for a sweetheart. ‘The Flour of the Family” was of the choicest brand, double superior—and very well dunn, In our opinion the ‘‘ Patent Expander” was as good a device as we ever saw, and required a strong, active young fellow to} support the character. The ‘‘ Matadore” looked as clear-limbed a youth as ever threw red cloth over “‘La Toras.” We leave the matter of the handsomest dress in the hands of the ladies. Altogether, 1t was the best spectacle ever seen in our city. The ice was a little damp ; perhaps the ‘‘ Directors” could not help that, though some one said in our hearing that the ice would be better if it had some of the cold north wind that was singing outside. Seriously, however, King Solus shonld have kept the north: wind-at all events, till the south-west re- turned, and that was after midnight. Every- thing passed off ‘‘as merry as a marriage bell.” The discomforts endured were far in conformity with the dresses in which they had clothed themselves. But what matter, if all tended to the general amusé- ment, as few recognized the difference be- tween good acting and burlesque. Now, more than counterbalanced by the pleasures of the evening and the excellent arrange- ments, The order that prevailed was per fect, and the courtesy of the Directors all that could be desired by the most expectant. The following list of characters, which Miss as some ‘pretty girl with well-fitted costume, and large dark eyes under | their fringe of Jong black lashes, | would catch our eye, she carried us in fancy’ far away to sunny lands where ice is uy- known.
