IIOAIQIIII Bees have a well chosen police QSKCIII to protect themselves Mmst the criminal classes. .when we study bees. we find mm is plenty of evidence to mw they are clever and intellig- isx and turpentine. The natural- gi knew this stuff would be bet- ”, than the bud varnish bees ., to repair their homes. But would the bees use-it? They im- iiiiiuted for pollen when the lat- ter is hard to come by. although the. flour differs greatly In taste. smell and color. I Today many colonies are sup- plied with ready-made foundations tor their combs and strange but true. the bees always use them. The same sort of intelligence can hardly be chalked up to man for when he first saw the reaper at tori: he laughed and went right in with his scythe. .'l'his is the more remarkable when we learn that bees have no brains. instead they have-ganglia. centers of gray matter scattered throughout their bodies and con- nected with their sense organs. 'l'hcir muscles obey these sensa- tions sndgso it g . it is comfortin to know when we put on worms on our fish hooks they experience no sense of pain. Or do they? Professor Wheeler of Harvard tells of an ant which had lost its head in battle - yet strange to say. it stayed alive for 41 days and went about as usual until it died from starvation. Further proof that insects suffer no pain when terribly injured. is borne out by the case of a dragonfly that lost most of its stomach and still continued to devour flies unlimit- ed Like cats and dogs. most in- sects have a remarkable sense of direction. Bees taken in a box sev- eral miles from their hive have no difficulty finding ther way back.- that is the adult been don't. But the first time baby bees venture out of the hive they often have trouble finding their way back. How do they do it? First, the youngsters are taken above the hive in flight circles. and while in the air they keep a sharp eye on every object around the home. Then they are taken to the honey flowers. They can aways find their way home afterward. RCN Benevolent Fund OTTAWA, (CP) - Rear-Admiral G. L.
