The charge of corruption, favoritism and other misconduct against oflicials in the Yukon distrizt have obtained wide publicity through the press and l the discussifms in parliament, and many persons are disposed to believe that where so large a volumeof smoke has rolled up there must be some fire below. It is not, indeed to be won- dered at that all should not run 'smoothly in a communit of adv suddenly brought together from all j parts of the globe and huddled to- l gethei* in s wilderness afar from the confines of general settlement and ~ civilization. To maintain order, establish police and courts of justice; to provide a post oihce, a. custom l house, a mines oiliee;to collect duties. l 'ties--these are not easy tasks in a country so distant from the central authority and among a population largely alien, and with many of its members hostile to Canadian rule. It is therefore not surprising that there should be errors of judgment among the odicials and loud complaints from ' those predisposed to make complaints, and to place the worst construction upon oiiicial acts. This is precisely what his occurred. The alien miners, accustomed to the lawlessness of border life elsewhere, were unwilling to submit to Canafiin 'indisputable proofs onlwhich Kennedy mation he got he sc-nt to the Conser- vative Association at Ottawa. Pulford »~r~fii<<~fl to nnsvrer many qucstioml aslvd him by the commissioner, but admitted that he is a member of t-he Association just referred to. He re- fused to say whether he was paid by them. Pulford was then imprisoned for contempt of court in refusing to an- swer but after a brief imprisonment appeared in court, confessed himselfa liar, and that he knew nothing against any oflicial. This collapse does not prove that the ollicials have been blameless, but it goes to show that sensational and untrue statements have been manufactured at Dawson by interested parties and sent broad- cast over the Dominion and the world, no doubt misleading many honest and fair-minded people. It is well that the charges should be sifted to the bottom, but those who desire to form a just udgement will do well not to form hasty conclusions based on the statements of aliens and men of the Pulford class. -Q-¢is>~-_-_~ Dr. Kennedy of New York, con- victed of brutally murdering D illy Reynolds, after becoming possessed of her money, wrote the New York World that after being found guilty and returned to his cell he was fast asleep in fifteen minutes. He asks, "Could a guilty man have done that Z” The World, after summing up the was convicted says: “Sleep is a mat- ter of nerves' And murderers _in cold blood are not likely to be men of sensitive nerves.” Beyond that there is the possibility that Kennedy lied about his sleep. ~ J Fliill \ f ~ ““"-` QP ' _._”,;2; _»‘ The Story Teller i ‘** n writers, they hive professional story- tellers.
