SAVANNAH, Ga., June 23 (A.P.) -The discovery that white paper can be mo/de from virtually all southern pine was announced here today. White paper chemical pulp, made for the first time from long leaf and loblolly pines, B0 per cent of the Southern States' pine forest, was prepared for exhibition to a meeting of the Georgia Forestry As- sociation. The discovery was made within the past month at Georgivs experi- mental paver mill here. The new method of making paper wa; announced by the director of research, Dr. Charles H. I-Ierty of New York, fcrrner president oi the American Chemical Bociety. The Plvccss is a development of his dis- covery two years ago that, contrary to a 50 years old belle! ot scientists and paper experts, white paper and newsprint can be made from slash pine. There are only about 10,000,000 acres of slash pine in the south, but long leaf and loblolly, the new white paper pines, cover 100,000,000 acres constituting the bulk of south- ern forests. Two vsrictlu of southem pine re- main untested for white paper man- ufacture. Both will be tried out in the Savannah plant. Dr. Herty said no reason is known for anticipating failure with them. They are Vir- ginia pine and short lea! or "old field" Pine. Inwyer-And just how bud do you want the divorce.
