Lent. | The following quaint poem on Lent is one | of the productions of George Herbert, the | religious poet of the seventeenth century, : Welcome, dear feast of Lent; whe loves not thee, He loves not Temperance, or authority, But is composed of passion, The scriptures bid us fast; the church says now ; Give to thy mother what thou would’st allow To ev’ry corporation, The humble soul composed of love and fear Begins at Home and lays the burden there When doctrines disagree ; He says in things which use hath justly got I am a scandal to the church and not The church is #0 to me, The Christian should be glad ofan occasion To use their temperance seeking no occasion, When good is seasonabie, Unless authority, which should increase The obligation in us, make it less And Power itself disable. It’strasjwe cannot reach Christ's forti’th day Yet to go part of that religious way Ia better than to rest; We cannot reach our Sayiour's purity, Yet we are bid ‘Be hely even as He,” In both let's do our best, Who goeth in the way that Christ hath gone Is much more sure to meet with him, than one That travelieth by-ways; Perhaps my God though He be far before May turnand take me by the hand, and more May strengthen my decays, Yet Lord, instruct us to improve our fast By starving sia and taking such repast As may our faults control ; That every man may revel at his door Not in his parlor; banquetting the poor, And among those his soul. —Geo, Herbert. What People are Talking About. Montreal is gaining an uvenviable reputation for herself. If matters do not mend, it will soon be impossible to secure conviction in the courts for the most heinous offences against the well- being of society. The Jury system is being prostituted and the ends of justice are being defeated in a manner which recalis the worst days of the reign of disorder in the United States, when judges and juries were characterless and openly corrupt. Twice within a week Judge Ramsay bas found it ne- cessary to administer a sharp rebuke to the jury, which in the most flagrant way, and in utter defiance of the best principles of law and morality, returned verdicts of ‘aot guilty,” in the face of evidence which most convincingly prov- ed the guilt of the prisoners on trial. Well might his honor say, “should the same thing repeat itself, I will discharge the jury and adjourn the proceeding of the court until the 15th, when a new panel is sum- moned. Should we even then not be able to find a jury sufficiently in- telligent to return verdicts in accordance with the evidence, I will again adjourn the court until one can be found. Faise oaths are being taken by the score, and when such isthe case, I believe I have & word to say in the matter.” In this the Judge will have the sympathy of the respectable portion of the community. The recent proceedings in his court have been simply disgraceful, and trial by jury has degenerated into a broad farce. The Largest City m the World. The population of London exceeds everyother city, modern, in the world. all its adjacent cities notequal to two-thirds of it. Seot- land, Switzerland, and the Austrian colonies each contain fewer souls, while Norway, Servia Greece, and Denmark have scarcely so many. Yet at the beginning of the present century the population of ali Loudon did not reach 1,000,000. now ancient or New York and combined are <=.
