The really bad bid was made .by West. when he doub- led six spades. south interred very dellnitely from this double that west had the spade king and the missing ace. and so tried out six notrump in the hope that enough tricks could be taken without bringing in the spade suit. It is true that six riotr-ump had very little chance. but six spades had none! . West. hard pressed for an open- ing lead. selected his top diamond. Bobby couldn't be seen and so the hunters could be be sure he was up there. one of them raised his gun and tired into the nest twice. He thought that if there were any one in the nest it would drive him out. It didn't. The hunters decided there was no one there and moved on. The Dog was already barking on another trail. Those hunters -were having a good time. This was sport. when they got home they would talk about what. a good time they had had. Meanwhile Bobby Coon lay in the nest or Redtaii the Hawk. He was whimpering softly for he was bad- ly hurt. He had been shot in one hind leg, the right one. How it ached. And there was nothing he could do about it except to lick the wound. Those shots had torn through the nest as if it were DID er. " hat shall I do?" moaned Bob- by cver and over. You see. he was a long way from home. when he tried to move that log it hurt dreadfully. After a long time Bobby managed to crawl out of the nest and slow- ly, climb down that tree. He couldn't hurry. arid all the time he was afraid, He was atralri that that Dog and thosr hiiiiters would come back. slowly, on so slowly. he made his way home to the hollow tree in that part of the Green Forest that belonged to Farmer Brown. He was sale there. He knew it. No hunters with dreadful guns were allowed there. It. was daylight when he reached his hollow tree. It seein- ed to him that he could never. never climb up to the doorway of his home. But he did. He was still whimpering as he slowly climbed down to the bed at the bottom 01 the hollow. He continued to whimp- er as he licked his wound. Faintly trom far oil in the Green Forest came the bang of a dreadful gun. Bobby Coon shivered. Was some one else being hurt in the name of sport? Bobby wasnt a cry-baby. No in- deed. He was anything but a cry- baby. but he continued to whimper for a little while. That -wounded leg was growing more and more stiff. The more stut it became thc more it hurt when he tried to more it. How was he ever going to get. out of hisvhcn-ie and climb down that tree to get something to eat? How was he ever going to get a drink of water when he needed it? Bobby didn't think about those things just then. but he would later.
