Residents of the village of Wel- i lington in Prince County got quite i a scare last evening when about 6.30 and during a 35 mile an hour gale a fire sprung up in tall grass about a quarter mile from the settlement with the wind blow- ing in that direction. The Wellington Fire Depart- ment, under Fire Chief Howard Barlow. quickly assembled and with the help of about '70 other volunteers managed to let the dangerous looking blaze under control in about an hour. The fire burned over an acre or more of land and along the railway track. it scorched the fence poles and telegraph poles but did not destroy any of them. No water was available to oper- ate the pumper so the workers had to fight the fire with shovels, mops and brush, beating it out Fire Chief Barlow said that the village tvas in serious danger oi being wiped out if the fire had not been discovered in time llid fouziit idznrnusly. He is of the opinion that it could only have been started by a careless smoker as there are no buildings ncar. A zuard was in be left on duty till midnight in case it sprung up again.
