MESSAGE FROM TH. COORDINATOR The following pages contain the results of the first Survey on Teaching conducted by the University of Prince Edward Island Student Union. The survey was conducted during the latter part of November and the early part of December of 1993. The survey results have been broken down in four ways. First, there are overall figures for the entire university. Next the data is broken down into six faculties: Arts, Business Administration, Education, Nursing, Veterinary Medicine, and Science. The data is then broken down into the departments within each of the six faculties, these include History, Biology, Math, etc. A final breakdown was done on the basis of individual courses which met criteria that will be discussed later. Although the number of surveys that were completed (705) was disappointing, it is still a good starting point on which to build in the coming years. Another survey is planned for second semester courses with forms being available in March. Hopefully, the survey conducted in second semester will be more successful in terms of surveys completed and as such more individual courses will be examined. There are a couple of points that should be discussed in advance to make the data more meaningful. - enrolment figures within departments that appear in the survey are based on the total number of people taking courses in the department. As such, a person, for example, who is taking three English courses will be included three times within the enrolment figures. - in order for an individual course to be considered it required at least 10 responses or failing that a minimum of 50% response rate from those enroled in the course. I hope the information contained in this survey will be of assistance to you in the future. In closing, I would like to thank the U.P.E.I. Student Union and especially Andrew MacPherson (V.P. Internal) and the members of the Committee on Teaching at U.P.E.I. for all their assistance over the past two months.
