warning which we trust will be similarly -issued and
acted, upon' by other pork dealers, with referencefto
`ini`fi_n_isiied hogs, should b_e carefully pondered by _every
ifarpier in the province/ “ Those hogs are not saleable
and cannot be received'_at'any price. T0 d0 SO W0l\ld
Tt1in'.Pri1rce Edward Island pork trade.” This is the
point; it would ruin the Prince Edward Island pork
trade. Messrs Davis & Fraser and all-theother pro-
ducc'tlcalers in the province would be untrue to them-
‘selves and to the province if they accepted frbln the
farmers and shipped abroad any produce of inferior
quality. The trade of the province will either be built
up or ruined by the quality of the produce we ship, and
it has received a bleck eye more than once through
the carelessness of merchants in accepting unmarket-
able stuff. The ruin of oui oats trade with_ Great
Britain is an old story. It was bgught about bythe
fact that a few dishonest farmers succeeded in passing
the too careless merchant of his day with dust-filled
and uncleaned oats. The result was that Prince
Edward Island oats became utterly discredited and
would not be accepted in the British market_withou_t
the most rigid inspection. It took many years to undo
the mischief then wrought and for which the",mer-
chants were equally responsible with the farmers. _
T hc merchant who accepts everything that is offer-
edllim regardless of quality  no friend of the farmer
or of the province. _ He is the farmers' true friend and
the builder of his eountrys trade who will rigidly
refuse to accept stuff that is unfit for consumption at
home or abroad. When our merchants adopt this rule
and stick toit the_quality»_of`our produce will be such
that the markets both.at home and abroad will always
be open to it and atzthe best prices that themarkets
will afford. ' _ '
VVe are.now on the eve of a new era in our trade
relations uiitlnthc.. outside world. Foundations are'
being lai<l‘for a larger business connection than \ve
ever dreamed of. The sources of supply in Europe,
by which Great Britain was largely fed, `are being
either cut off or changed to such dn extent that new
sources must be opened up. Canada is going`to ‘be
one of the largest of these sources and Prince Edward
Island should be a very large tributary to that source.
it remains with our selves whether we shall share in
the new development or go on in the old ruts. There,
is one way by which \ve can get in, that is by produc-
ing :r quality of foodstuffs that the markets will de-
mand. lt is quality that counts and that brings both'
the demand and thc price. - _
\Ve have an opportunity right now to build up a
pork trade, provided we comply .with the q¢m(litim,5_
The pork merchants must' comply with these or they
cannot get into the market. Our farmers must comply
or the merchants must refuse to handle their stuff.
It is possible that it may cost a little more this year
t° llmsh h‘f‘8'S P_f0pe_rly, but the extra cost is compen-
sated for 1n_the higher price. In any case quality
counts for more than price. It is much better to lay
secure foundations for future trade than to place pro-
commumtlcs are little regarded in Paris, and preniiers H

tions that .produce/frequent changes in peace evidently
continue to operate in other_ times; so even the govern- _
ment formed to acrry the country through the war is ~

Canada is blessed with'an inexhaiistible fish supply.
Indeed, our fisheriestare,tl1e"`iiJost`f:x`tensive in the
world. In addition to such famous fishing banks as
_the Georges, Roseway, Lahave, Banquero, Misaine,
_Sable Island, the .Grand Banks,'a'nd' many others
adjacent* to -our Atlantic' coast, web have on that
seaboard, witho_ut'taking ihto account the smaller bays
and coves, about fife..thou`sand miles of seaboard,
practically every mile of which 'is stocked with ex-
cellent food fish, and the whole length of it is dotted
with harbours and coves from which the fishermen
can carry on their calling with comparative case and
safety. Off the Pacific coast we have by' far'the
richest and largest halibut fishery in the world. The
deep seas there are also stocked with many other
excellent varieties of food fish, and along the shore-
line there are_ over seven thousand miles of coast
waters into which How such large glacier-fed rivers as
the Fraser, Skecna, Naas and others, up which every
year swarm countless thousands of five different
varieties of salmon. ‘
 .In addition to our' sea fisheries. we have over
220,000 square, miles of fresh waters, most of which
are abundantly stocked with excellent fish, the supply
 which is being kept up by our hatchcrjes.
_ Z 'FIRST PIPERVOLUNTEERS
' As the result of the appeal for pipers to form a ~
pipe band for the Prince Edward Island Highland
Regiment several applications have already been re-,
cpived. One of the best known and most skilled
bagpipe players in the province volunteered last night
for overseas service and expressed his willingness to
instruct and train any others desirous of joining the
band. The names of five other pipers have been sub-
mitted and everything indicates that before long the
skirl of the bagpipes and the beat of the kcttledruni
will be heard throughout thc province calling the
youngmen to the ranks of the Highland Regiment.
A full pipe band usually cons_ists of eleven, eight pipcrs
and three drummers, so that those eligible should
make early application to prevent disappointment. The
Honorary Secretary of the Patriotic Association,
Captain T. Edgar McNutt, will receive applications"
