Maritime Fish ‘ Industry Makes Great Strides HALUAX, May 2—C.P.)—Large increases in catches of Maritime fishermen, are noted in a report of the Eastern Division of the De- partment of Fisheries. In New Brunswick, the March catch of the shore fishermen was almost double that for the same Period last year._.A remarkable in- crease in the scallop fishery no. counted for the rise. ' Increases in the scallop and had- dock fisheries aer responsible also, according to the report, for an un- usually heavy catch in Nova Bcotla. Prince Edward Island reports a. small catch. as compared with none for last year. ‘Ibtal catch for the three prov- inces amouutfld to 9.520.000 pounds valued at $168,563 for the month of March. For the same period last. year, the amount landed was 5,790,- 500 pounds, having a value of $123,- 004. Nova. Scotia, as usual, far out- stripped the other provinces in the total catch of her fishermen, which amounted to 3,330,800 pounds with a value of $150,245. This represent- cd an increase of more than 3,000,- 000 pounds over last March's land- ing of 5,175,100 pounds with ‘its landed value of $116,022; While New Brunswick?» total catch was not nearly as large as that of the Bluenose province, nevertheless its increase was even more pro- nounced. Landings rose from 615,- 000 pounds to 1,171,900 pounds, with a. corresponding increase in value from $6.982 to $18,881. Prince Edward Island's fishermen reported only 18.000 pounds for the month. but even this amount was an increase over the same month last year, when there was no catch. Spec- ial emphasis was placed upon walk- ing. In a world of tram-cars. auto. mobiles and other conveyances, and with the pressing desire to get everything done quickly. it arppears as if the present generation has reduced walking to a minimum. A case is quoted of a young man about to engage in a game of ten- 1118. who was greatly displeased because he was forced to wait a few moments for a lift to take him down two flights of stairs. Walking is one of the bestand most economical of all forum of physical exercise. Nowadayswheth- or due to prolonged stooping over work, or to habitually maintaining a slouching position, a consider- able number of individuals are be- coming round-shouldered. Walking. apart from giving poise and a cer- tain grace to the carriage, also permits of proper expansion of the lungs. Walking, with the head erect and the shoulders squared ensures that the abdominal muscles are held firmly, with the result that they are less apt to become flabby, a condition which is so commonly seen in the round- shouldered individual. Other mus- cles brought into play in the act of “Wilkins are those of the should- er-girdle, the tlrghs, the legs and the feet. There are unfortunately a cer- tain class of people to whom much walking is more or less forbidden. Among these are people with lung or heart disease. These individuals will naturally be advised by their Physician as to the amount of ex- ercise they may undertake without 90111110 on their physical reserves. To all others, however, walking may offer Just that zest which makes life worth-while. It may be the means of stimulating a slug- irish intestinal tract. of improving the appetite, and giving a tone to otherwise flabby muscles. , We are in grave danger of losing the art of walking. Walking in the fixture may be confined to the mil Ymnl "l0 home to the office. or from the door to a. waiting motor-car. If this be so, the“; win disappear a very "balm in Gilead" for mnny of our everyday i115 and Often some of our more serious dis- orders. A special newspaper distributing centre, in itself a. min- iature station, is being erected. __ The whole terminus covers an area of 80.000 square yards and 200,- 000 cubic feet of earth were remov- ed to prepare the site.
