All of- ferings were well taken on a scale down and the majority of losses were not serious. The market is at present exper- iencing a. backing and filling move- ment. Por a. time a. strong tone is maintained after which selling cc-. curs and advance ts wiped out. These movements are not at'all signifi- cant, as they are engineered solely by New York professionals who take advantage of technical conditions for their benefit. Canadian companies which have issued reports on operations for the first six months of the current. year are to be commended in informing shareholders how the organization is weathering a. difficult period of cic- pression. It L: gratifying, indeed, to see so many companies reporting earnings well above dividend require- ments, even though profits al'e not equal to those of last year. Among the latat companies to ve- port on six months operations are Dominion Stores and Hamilton Bridge, two ‘compancis whose activ- ities lie 1n widely divergent direc- tions. Doaninion Stores in the first half earned 88c a share, after all charges. Hamilton Bridge earnings were somewhatfbetter than $1.80 a share forths six months.
