Quersec, July 25.—This morning smug- glera Bouchard and Lanry were expected to appear at the police court, but the suthor- ities did not bring them up. The prisoners’ lawyers, Fitzgerald and Charles Langelier, however, were present, but were unable to do anything in their behalf until the Gov- ernment’s intentions were known. It was subsequently learned that the Government lawyer, Panet Angers, had been wired in- structions from Ottawa to appear and pro- secute, and to resist all applications for bail until the witnesses from below had come upto be heard. Panet Angers, how- ever, being confined to his house by indis- position, did not appear. An arrangement was made to postpone the case until 2.30 this afternoon. The motion to discharge the prisoners was refused, and the case postponed. Lonpon, Jaly 25 —At a meeting of the beard of directors of the Grand Trunk Rail- way of Canada, it was decided that Sir Henry Tyler, president, and Mr. Hubbard, the new director and vice-president of the English board, of the Great North Westera Railway, proceed to Canada about the mid- dle of August to examine thoroughly into the working of the entire system. They will be accompanied on their tour of inspec- tion by several leading American and Cana- dian railway experts, The principal! object of the visit of Sir Henry and Mr. Hubbard is to reduce materially the working expenses of the railway, especiaily in the pay and working departments. The board decided that expenses must be reduced to the low- est reasonable point. New York, July 25..—The board of walking delegates struck their greatest blow to-day against the Iron League and Build- ing Material Dealers’ Association, when general strikes on the Waldorf hotel and the new Netherland hote! were ordered. Per- haps this is the mode of retrenchment marked out by the grits of our fair Province.” & party who attended at the} interview with the committees of the City Council and Boaré of Trade to-day in re- gard to additional terminal facilities at Halifax. As before explained, Halifax is in absolute need of additional terminal facilities, but opinion differs as to what it shall be, the City Council favoring a cen- tral depot and the Board of Trade an ex- tension along the wharves. The question was semi-ofticially referred te Messrs. Van Horne and Shaughnessy as railway experts for an independent opinion, purely from a railway point of view. Without expresing any opinion on the question to-day, Mr Van Horne said he had locked on the sit: uation pretty fully from what would be his standpoint were he managing the Intercol- onial, without any regard to local opinion or ipfiaence. He had looked over the ground from the standpoint of local as well as foreign freight requirements. Regard- ing the extension along the water front, Mr. Van Herne incidentally remarked that he had never known a case of a rail- way being extended along a water front without increase to the value of that water front of from 100 tu 5,000 per cent. and he would be very much surprised if Halifax sharf owners stood in their own light for any length of time in view of that fact, by refusing to bring their water and railway facilities together, In the afternoon, Messrs. Van Horne, Shaughnessy, Angus, Messrs. Kenny and Scairs, M. P’s., and others were given a del:ghtful «xcursion on Halifax Harbor, the Northwest Arm and Bedford Basin.
