Taschereau has sacceeded in obtaining from the Pro- paganda aid for the Montreal branch of the Laval University. Some months ago the Laval authorities decided to close this branch, as no aid for its support could be obtaired from Rome. Now the Rev. Mr. Hamuel, Rector of Laval, announces to the Montreal professors that their engagements and salaries will continue, also that a new building will soon be erected to accommodate the faculties of law and medicine at a cost of $50,000. --> Ten to twelve thouand people were in at tendance at Belmont, Pa., on the 18th inst, when Jay-Eye-See and Phallas, attempted to break the record, Jay-EAe-See beat the record for three-quarters of a mile, but for a losing break just after enter- ing the last quarter, without doubt, would have clipped a second or more off Maud 8's fastest time. Of these more than half, or 8,707, settled in the Dominion, and 7.858 went to their original destination, the United States. During July, 1883, the arriv- als were 21,706, of whom 11,109 settled in Canada. Out of a total arrival of 97,676 im- migrants during the seven mouths from January Ist, the Dominion secured 55,294 settlers, while in the corresponding sevea months of 1888 the Dominion secured 69.066 settlers, out of atotal of 116,575 immigrants arriving on this continent via Canadian ports. Herr Mangen has presented a report to the Academy of Science concerning the re- cent balloon ascension at Mendon. The balloon was under the direction of Captain Renards, and aithough it moved against the wind it easily followed the course along which it was steered. _ It was then veered around and brought back to the point from which it started.
