Next the route swung south and westward along route two with stops at Black Pond, Little Harbour, and Souris. Side trips to Southampton and Savage Harbour Bay were relatively unproductive but a variety of birds were picked up at Mount Stewart, Pisquid Pond, Pisquid River, Dalvay, Covehead, Robinson’s Island, North Rustico, and Cavendish. Highlights included an American Coot at the Allisary Creek impoundment near Mount Stewart, Eastern Wood Peewee at Robinson’s Island, and a great look at a Blackpoll Warbler at Orby Head. From Cavendish, the route led to the Charlottetown Airport where Upland Sandpiper were seen. At that point 131 species had been seen, very close to the single day record. A decision was made to try for the day’s elusive Spotted Sandpiper at several sites around Charlottetown as well as the Glaucous Gull. The Glaucous Gull was seen on the stone jetty in Charlottetown Harbour but we had no luck finding the Spotted Sandpiper or the Nighthawks. The weather was variable with mist, cloud, sun, and very brief rain showers. The winds were low during the night and morning but picked up towards the end of the day. Temperatures were cool until lunch time. The time frame for the birding for Team 2 was between 2:30 am and 9:00 pm and they covered 420 km. Together, the two teams observed and heard 133 species.
