Colenial House, Montreal. ap22—t ts tf —————$————— FIGUSE, ——_ [LETTERS TO THE EDITOR | MKernaghan—A Remipiscence, Sir,—It must be thirty years since one ‘winter day, at dinner, a telegram wae | handed my father, addressed to the Rev. ‘Theophilus DesBrisay. As the only sur- | viving son of *‘the old parson,” who died 14th March, 1823 (some 40 years before), my father opened it, It was from a Mr. Kernaghan, sn Irish solicitor, who was at Cape Tormentine waiting to cross to the Island, and it intimated that my grand- father’s presence was urgently required in his native land, to prove the marriage of the late Cesar Colclough (pronounced Cokely), Chief Justice of P. E. Island. After a day or two Mr, Kernaghan ar- rived. His business was important ; the succession of a branch of the Colclough family to the estate of Tintern Abbey de pended upon proof of the marriage of our Chief Justice of that name, and it was sup- posed that my grandfather, as Rector of St. Paul's, had performed the marriage ceremouy. But no record of such marriage was to be found in the books, and the memory of the oldest inhabitant could not recall such an event having taken place in Charlottetown. Eventually the late Mr. Theophilus Stewart accompanied Mr. Ker- naghan to Ireland, and his evidence estab- lished the case for that gentleman’s clients. Mr. Stewart’s testimony was based upon his acquaintance with Cesar Colclough and his family in Newfoundland, where he held ottice after leaving P. E. Island. I remember distinctly that Mr. Kerna- ghan was anxious to entertain the principal Charlottetonians, and wished to have ** the parson at the head of the table and the priest at the foot”—so he expressed it. ' Religious strife was running very high at the time, and it was explained to Mr. K. that such an arrangement of the table would be impossible. I cannot recollect whether the dinner took place, but I do remember that Mr. Kernaghan was very much shocked at such an alarming state of society. it was evidently a condition of affairs to which the Colclough family have always been strangers, if we are to judge from the following newspaper clipping, which 1 ask you to be kind enough to publish, and which, 1 think, will prove interesting to some of your readers. Wittram ©. DesBrisay. Ottawa, June 2, 1892. A WexrorD LanpLORD HoNORED BY CeNANTS.—A novel incident occurred iu (intern Abbey, Wexford, recently, when a 1umber of tenants presented an address und iy _ of sovereigns to Captain F. D. B. Solclough, J. P, who with his family are hreatened with evicition from the abbey. } At the beginning of theland agitation Captain Colelough gave his tenants a reduction in ent of 25 per cent., by which merciful action ie deprived himself of any benefit from the «state. The remainder of the rents went catirely to the mortgagees, chargeants nd others, so that the generous-hearted Japtain’s sacrifice for the tenants meant the ianding over to them of ailthat otherwise je would receive for his own support. Capt- iia Colclough said, in response to the present- «tion: ‘*My heart is too full of gratitude to ‘he Catholic priests and people of Wexford {or the efforts -_ have made on behalf of my tamily and myself, to allow me to speak as J cught in thankiog you and them for the kiad ect. And why should it not be so? Looking Leyond and above the monetary value of this jresent which you have just handed me, cave [not reason to be proud to-night? Was caere ever in the history of this country such an example of the noble and high-spirited character of the people of Ireland, and of the people of Wexford in particular? Here am I siffering in religion from you and your loaders, coming as I do from amongst 6 vlass which has always been regarded as sae bane and the curse of the people of Ireland—here am I when in trouble, sup. corted through thick and thin by the very reople who in the natural course of events s10ould wish me and every member of my class forever out of the country.” A dinner was c1en served in Tirtern Abbey, during which Capt. Colclough propvsed the health of ‘‘the riesthood of freland” He said that as far cack as "98 his great-g-andfather had saved toe lives of two Catholic priests, and had sheltered them in the Oastie of Rathrobbin, vrhere they lived. He was in charge ot the ~— {How ave you!” _Nicely; Thank You,” } { “Thank Who!” "Why the inventor of ScoThs EMULSION h cured me of CONSUMPTION.” Give thanks for its discovery. @That it does not make you sick when you take it. They remained there for many years until the time came when the laws igainst Catholics were repealed, and ever since the farm was locally known as the ‘ Priest’s Meadow.” As an Irish Protestant nis proudest boast on behalf of himself and family, both on the side of the Biddu'phs and :ae Coicloughs, was that wken in Ireland a price was set on the head of a Catholic priest jast with the same formality as on the head of + wolf or other vermin, there was not a member of them ever took p.rt, direct or ine lirect, in the disgraceful hunt. No, he had always esteemed it an honor, which he prized jearly, to have the friendship of the Catholic priest all his lifetime, and he hoped the bond which now existed between the Colcloughs sad the clergy of Tintern, Ramsgrange, The Elook, Sutton’s Parish and all round the coun- scy would never break, but would strengthen and cement them more closely as years went by. Old Dr, Johnson once said addressing a slass of medic«l students, that the study of medicine w.s a most arduous undertaking; ‘hat the most comprehensive mind and the most industrious student could scarcely de more than explore the portals to medical knowledge during the brief time alloted to study before commencirg practice, but that th: oughout bis whole Jife the responsibilities of his profession should reat upon him like a night mare. He should explore every avenue ot natural knowledge, must become familiar with chemistry, natural philosophy and natural history, but, above all, he must learn the construction of his own frame, the means by which he lives, moves and has his being. He must understand the nature of all those influeaces by which health is broken down and restored and by what means disease, suffering and death may be averted, Dr Johnson further says that poth- ing contributes so much to the support of quackery as the present insufficiency of medi- cal knowledge. Men do not, he says, easily abandon hope, but as readily put faith in ig- norant pretenders as drowning men catch at straws. “The good that men do in this life lives after them.” During the lifetime of old Dr. Johneon he invented what is now known as Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment, a standard fam- | ily remedy of su: passing merit. This liniment is both for internal and externa! use, and it is safe to say that no single remedy ever dis- covered has done so much aaa as has this one. It is inexpensive, ready at a moment’s notice night or day and may be used with | absolute confidence in the thousand and one ailments that afflict humanity. In the cure of severe cramps or pains in the stomach or bowels, dysevtry, diarrhea, acute or chronic, this ailment is a sovereign remedy. In the case of chronic diarrhoea it is certainly worth its weight in gold. It has been known to cure cases of from ten to fifteen years stand- ing after the sufferers had been given up. j28 d6i whi News Notes.
